The 2007 Review - a Year of PC Gaming

YouGamers' Best Game of 2007

Believe it or not, the YouGamers staff are actually human and thus we all have our own personal likes and dislikes, especially when it comes to video games. Lots of other sites poll choices across various genres but, to be honest, I couldn't be bothered to do that, so instead I just asked for the staff's best game of 2007: PC and/or console.

Valve's Portal

The decision was almost universal - I say almost simply because Jarno just had to go and be Jarno, and pick World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade. "Okay, so I'm a WoW-junkie," he said, with classic understatement. "No other game has kept me happily playing it for so long." This naturally gave us all a God-given right to beat him with a stick. Another dissenter in the ranks, albeit only slightly, was Joe, who plumbed for BioShock... as well as the overall winner. Antti decided to be awkward too; World in Conflict was his choice as "it's just a cool mix of accessible online play and great single player gaming, with a refreshing Cold War turned hot setting. WiC has free downloadable content, the best, no-hassle server browser ever, and it's the only instant action multiplayer RTS to date."

Anyway, the main winner was Portal. Jani emphatically claimed it to be "the best game experience evah", whilst Aaron applied a bit more decorum, saying that it "takes the concept of portals to a new level with just the right amount of challenge and story". As for myself, I wholeheartedly agreed: it's just a delicious slice of perfect gaming cake.

Daniel, Claudio, Aaron.. the rest of the team really, raved about Portal and The Orange Box in general. Cue Jarno again: "The Orange Box is clearly the best of the "normal" titles this year, and out of that package, Team Fortress 2 has provided most entertainment. It's simple, it's fun, and it's so polished and well-balanced that even with just a handful of maps it makes the rest of the online shooters look bad."

On the console front, it was even-stevens between just two titles. Can you guess from the comments? "...brings innovative gameplay to the classic series, and it's easily GOTY on any platform (console, handheld or PC)"; "...proves that third parties still don't seem to understand that cranking out ugly waggle-enhanced ports of their PS3 and Xbox 360 titles is not made of Win". That was Aaron and Jarno; countering their choices was Joe, Daniel and Jani, who said that "it has its faults and it's (unfortunately) not KotOR 3, but it's still a wonderful game." Need I say more?

BioWare's Mass Effect

Nintendo's Super Mario Galaxy

Best PC Game of 2007 = Portal (plus Team Fortress 2, and the rest of The Orange Box too) Best Console Game of 2007 = Mass Effect & Super Mario Galaxy
