Remedy Interview - Part 2: "And Now For Something New"

By: Nick Evanson Apr 02, 2007

This is our second part of our trilogy interview with Remedy - the makers of classic games such as Death Rally, Max Payne and Max Payne 2. Before we started our chat, Petri Järvilehto, Markus Mäki and Sam Lake took us through a real-time demonstration of where they were up to with their next project: the massively anticipated Alan Wake. To be correct though, the work that they showed us was at least 6 months old and many improvements have been made since then - not that it seemed to need much to our eyes.

The sign says it all!
Alan Wake

It was, quite frankly, all just a bit too much. Sam narrated the storyline to us, whilst Petri explained some of the technology and gameplay features; at the same time, they gave us a real-time run through of the looks and some of the locations in Bright Falls - the small town where the game is centred around. We spent far too much time going "Oh my God!" or drooling slack-jawed at the visual feast before our eyes. There's nothing, absolutely nothing, on the market right now that looks as good or as detailed as this, and the guys still insisted that they had greatly improved the animations and so on.

We'll talk more about the technology and cool features in our 3rd and final part of our interview with Remedy but for now - just picture a bunch of people casually sat around a table, with one side trying to look all professional and not in the least bit fazed by what they'd just seen and the other side sitting back, cool and calm; knowing, quite simply, that they've just blown away another set of minds.

Remedy has always taken a new angle on old things.

It's also worth noting that Remedy is currently keeping the lid on most of the details surrounding Alan Wake. They're focusing on 100% on development, so it was a really rare opportunity to get to talk with them about the game.
