#10: Doom (1993)

Eat bullets, grunt!
Gore was key to Doom's success.

Doom, Doom II, Ultimate Doom, Final Doom - whichever one was voted for, people were effectively picking the same game and for the same reasons: nostalgia. Yes, it's very basic by today's standards but for the early 1990s, it was an absolute revolution for PCs and, quite frankly, gaming in general. Those who wasted so many hours of their lives back then on Doom will fondly remember the flickering lights, distant doors opening and slamming shut again; visceral grunts from unseen monsters and limited ammo all kept you firmly on your toes. For me, it became even worse once I'd discovered "mouse-strafing" (i.e. using the mouse to control the movement and not the keyboard), spinning the viewport like inebriated Whirling Dervish at the merest hint of cacodemon.

But not really scary though - Doom is just too much fun, too "over-the-top" to give you the real creeps.

#9: Resident Evil (1997)

And the horror starts here...

Here, doggy doggy!

Originally released for Sony's PlayStation a year earlier, the PC version of Capcom's "survival horror" game just sneaked ahead of Doom in the poll and you couldn't really get a more different genre too - here, one isn't an all-powerful action hero, loaded to the hilt with rocket launchers and miniguns. The complete opposite is true and along with the fixed camera views, one is pushed into a role that demands forethought and careful planning. Naturally, of course, that all goes out of the window when those bloody dogs jump through the window for the first time - "Aieee!" kapow! kapow! kapow! click..click..click

The sound of an empty barrel chamber must be one of the most common audio clips for people in this game. All of it is made worse still by the limited save-game system and upon release, Resident Evil was highly praised for driving forward new levels of tension and fear in video gaming.

For all its glorious horror movie shenanigans though, the laughable script and wooden voice acting stops it from issuing full-on heart failures though.
