Top 10 Scariest PC Games

#4: Cliver Barker's Undying (2001)

The premise of this game is pretty much laid out in front of you, given that Clive Barker is a well-known and highly successful horror writer. In other words, we're now well and truly into the realms of titles that are supposed to be scary. A brief glance at the visuals though might make one think otherwise but age is cruel to PC graphics.

As the game is set in the early 1920s, it strikes parallels with the writings of H.P. Lovecraft and many themes within Undying revolve around great supernatural forces of undead evil (well, it was hardly going to be about supernatural forces of chinchillas now, was it?) – the graphics, audio and gameplay all conspire to make this readily apparent to the player.

Perhaps the best twist in the game is one of the spells that the lead character can employ: Scrye allows one to view the world clairvoyantly, seeing past events and even hearing conversations and sounds long gone. One is never given too much information this way either, leading the player to fill in the missing pieces via their own imagination, and it’s remarkably effective at giving you the creeps.

However, one aspect of the game will make it difficult for today’s gamers to enjoy the shocks. Undying wasn’t a big seller six years ago; so badly, the multiplayer expansion and sequel were rapidly shelved. This means that one is going to have quite a struggle finding a copy in any bargain bins but it's worth the hunt.

#3: Aliens vs. Predator 2 (2001)

Run or fight - either way, there's going to be trouble.

What, again? Not quite - this is the sequel to our number 6 entry in the Top 10 Scariest PC games, although the Marine missions were once again specifically voted for. So why did this rank higher? Possibly because it's simply not as old as its predecessor and thus likely to be remembered easily. However, the storylines and sequential levels are justifiably more coherent and do a good job at making you feel weaker, more vulnerable and totally alone at times; which is, of course, the whole point. The two years separating the titles also had a noticeable impact on the quality of the graphics, level design and audio with the sequel being better in all areas.

This is Monolith's second entry in the Scariest PC Games poll but chronologically their first, appearing some four years before Condemned. It's also the best "Aliens" game for the PC by some margin, so get yourself a copy, gear up as a Colonial Marine and prepare to get that heart pumping.

They’re coming out of the walls!
