Top 10 Scariest PC Games#2: F.E.A.R. (2005)Ooh, look - it's another Monolith production! Horror-based games aren't the only titles that they're good at (see NOLF and Tron 2.0) but it has been something of a roll for them recently. But what of F.E.A.R. then? At first glance, it would seem to be yet another FPS shooter, featuring yet another mute all-action hero, going through the motions of yet another dastardly plot to destroy the world and make everyone slaves...MWAHAHAHAHA! Except F.E.A.R. isn't. It's all down to a small girl called Alma and her disturbing ability to wipe vast swaths of soldiers, seemingly without lifting a finger. Her appearances are hammered home with a marked use of "slow-mo" effects and classic horror movie audio clips; the player’s attention is mostly well captured by such events but there are times when one can be playing away and then something happens but you end up missing it because you’re not facing quite in the right direction.
FEAR (what is it with periods in game titles?) runs the full gamut of scare tactics to keep you on your toes and some of the set periods are superbly well executed - one favourite is to get you as climb up or down a ladder. Unlike most FPS games, where scaling steps is no different to running on the flat, FEAR has a fixed animation process for these events; at one point in the game, in a darkened corridor, one must descend a ladder to a lower platform. Your view swings away briefly before facing back from where you’ve just come from and pow! There’s Alma, standing right at your head. In a panic you end up hammering down the steps but upon reaching the floor, who should appear to your left, leering out of the gloom but another one of the game’s protagonists. Cue much flailing of weapons and random firing, hitting naught but air, as the apparition decays into nothing. For a good part of the early game, FEAR is nothing short of excellent but like so many of its ilk, it can’t keep up the suspense for long enough - not in terms of how long the suspense lasts for (eight hours would give you serious coronary problems) but more rather the frequency of the pieces. There are perhaps too many sections where FEAR becomes nothing more than a generic shooter, where the levels drag on, with endless hordes of faceless enemies to destroy.
However, FEAR didn’t come second in the list of scariest PC games for nothing and it’s an experience well worth trying - leave it until the middle of the night, turn off all the lights and leave all doors open. It'll make you think twice about so-called "cute little girls".
