Top 10 Scariest PC Games

By: Nick Evanson May 14, 2007

Video games are great but we don't need to be telling you that. Anyone who's tried their hand at a particular game and enjoyed it have done so because some kind of emotive response has been created by the gameplay - it could be an adrenalin rush due to frantic action, intense satisfaction upon completing a complex puzzle or a mutual feeling of friendship when a clan works together.

One of the hardest emotions to genuinely create in a game though is that of fear - movies have it easy, as the director can always ensure that the experience is the one intended. For something like a first person shooter it's considerably harder as the player is essentially free to look, move and act as they please. Cutscenes can help in this respect but they’re non-interactive and thus the player is removed from the event. But some do manage to pull it off, one way or another and to that end, we bring you the Top 10 Scariest PC games.

But who decided on the entries to the list? The bulk of the votes came from visitors to Futuremark's discussion board and the rest from YouGamers staff members; so a good range in types, ages and experience of players.

Nearly made it

There was quite a large variety in the games that were submitted to the poll (40 in total) but a good percentage of them only received a single vote; for example, Oblivion, Far Cry and Painkiller. Some were comic entries (The Sims, Britney's Dance Beat and the almighty Barbie Horse Adventures) but a few were genuine, if somewhat odd choices; the most notable of which being Rollercoaster Tycoon 3. Not a game that was designed with filling one's underpants in mind but riding along a foolhardy creation is certainly good for topping up your adrenalin.

Just outside the top 10 were a couple of classics that should have gained a few more votes to be honest - how the Cradle level in Thief 3 achieved a mere handful of nominations is beyond me. Poking its undead nose in at 11th place was Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines and the mission which involved a wee investigation of a derelict hotel. Simple, classic and very tense in places, it's a real shame that it didn't quite make it. Completely missing from the list altogether are superb moments such as the appearance of the T-Rex in Tomb Raider - shame on you!

However, those that formed the Top 10 Most Scariest PC Games, especially the top 6, were voted head and shoulders above the rest - so let's see how it all pans out, shall we? Grab a cushion to hide behind, keep all of your lights on and prepare to relive some chilling gaming moments!

And to start with, a real classic...
