Benoît Sokal's Sinking Island InterviewUnless you're turning on your PC for the first time, or unless you use it just to play Solitaire or Peggle Deluxe (and I'm totally OK with that - actually, I'm a proud Peggle Master), you probably will have heard of Benoît Sokal, or at least of some of the games he wrote. That's right, folks: we're talking about graphical adventures. Sokal, from Belgium, is one of the most appreciated and talented adventure authors, and a renowned comic illustrator (check out his Wikipedia entry if you want to know more about his works). In the last few years he wrote some of the most beautiful adventures ever, Amerzone and Syberia. He did not innovate the genre; he never wanted to. He gave it the dignity of a literary work, filling the typical adventure game with excellent dialogue, great characters, awesome art, rich scenarios and unique style. And most importantly, telling great stories. After all, this is what adventures are about, right? Stories. Tales. Who cares of the number of polygons or the dolby environmental uber surround mega plus, if the plot is fascinating and engaging, and you're totally IN the game's universe? Benoît Sokal is working on his last title, Sinking Island, developed by the software house he co-founded, White Birds Productions. I had the chance to discuss with him about the game, the adventure genre, and his future projects. So, forget your brand new video card, dual core CPUs and 1000W power supply units, and keep on reading!
