Top 10 FPS Single Player Games

By: Nick Evanson Aug 15, 2007

FPS - First person shooter. Three words, one genre and a whole host of games; it's almost the de facto style for a PC game today. That's you holding that gun, casting the spell and swinging the sword; you get to choose exactly where you look, touch and move to. It's the closest you can get to that virtual world.

Shooting games have been around since... well, if electricity was around when Noah was rebuilding after the floods, I'd bet money that he'd be playing a shooting game of some kind. Fairground attractions have offered the punter the chance to pop a cap in a duck's head for nearly a century now and there's no denying that it's the most popular activity in games (e.g. Action Man or Cowboys 'n' Indians all involve the use of guns).

It was some time before the concept of a character appeared in a video game and but the notion of having it in "first person" happened almost simultaneously; Maze War can be argued as being the first example of both uses. Indeed, it's essentially the first FPS game but for the purpose of this poll and the Top 10 list, we're concentrating on PC titles released any time between now and the early 1990s.

Nearly made it

Duke Nukem 3D

So what choices didn't make the Top 10? Well there were quite a few that just fell short of the mark: old favourites such as Duke Nukem 3D, Half-Life: Opposing Force and Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast were oh-so close, as were more recent efforts such as the love/hate-it Doom 3.

A few folks insisted on voting for 3rd person games, such as Max Payne and GTA: San Andreas but the first person bit in FPS is kind of important! Some should have done a lot better, quite frankly; Chronicles of Riddick got a pathetic number of entries and only one person chose the original Unreal! You're barmy, the lot of you! Nobody even mentioned Star Wars: Dark Forces or Painkiller - sob...

Painkiller

Fortunately, more than enough votes were accumulated to separate the Top 10 and although you may disagree with how it actually turns out, I think most people would agree that the list does compromise of ten very good games. All of the following releases are worthy purchases and if you've not got round to trying any of them out yet, now's the time to do so.

Remember though - you can't blame us for the results! You chose them! Read on to see which games you chose to for the Top 10 List of PC FPS games.
