In this blog, Nick Renqvist, a 3DMark developer, YouGamers/Futuremark Site Manager and an enthusiastic gamer rambles about pretty much everything and the kitchen sink. And sometimes about 3DMark too. This is THE place to catch some never-seen-before shots from the past and the future.

Your hardware has feelings too!

Hey Eveyone!

It's been a loooong time since I've had anything to say, but I finally thought to post something about hardware, and namely about the feelings of hardware. You might think I'm crazy talking about hardware having feelings, but how can you explain why old and trusty hardware starts to fail/get hiccups whenever a new component is brought in to replace it.. Bad luck? I don't think so.

Here's a short (and true) story what happened to me today.

Earlier today I got myself a new Xbox 360 as GameStop (EB Games) had a pretty decent deal; bring in an old PS2 + 5 games and get a Xbox 360 (Pro with HDMI) for 150€. Not too shabby deal at all! My PS2 was more or less just collecting dust, and since I mostly play with my Xbox 360, I thought to "upgrade" my 360 to the new model (HDMI all the way baby). So far so good. When I came home I started to transfer all the save-games etc. from my old HDD to the new one. Piece of cake, right? Well, not exactly.. My old 360 noticed instantly that something was up, and when I started the transfer it got ill and gave me the infamous RROD (Red Ring of Death)! What the heck.. I have had my 360 for two years now and our relationship has been marvelous; no fights, no hiccups, no problems what-so-ever. We spent some really good moments together, but it clearly just felt so bad being replaced by a new model.

Though I'm sure I will be happy with my new 360, I still feel kind of sad about my old trusty friend. It doesn't make me feel any better knowing that its next stop is the junkyard at MS service center, as I expect them to just swap it for another (old & fixed?) 360.

So, the next time you bring in some new hardware to replace your old one, please make sure that they don't see or meet each other! If they do, you can bet your ass that your old hardware will feel bad and go nuts on you. Trust me!

If anyone out there has a similar story, don't hesitate to let the world know.

Cheers,

Nick
