Scott Miller Interview - The Man Who Would Be King?
In the gaming world, developers come and go, but few make such an impact on the industry that people still talk about a game that was made 11 years with the same level of passion that first greeted it. Not only that, one of the key people in its creation is still going strong, helping to shape games of today and the near future. Who better to ask about the game industry, past and present? Who better to ask what it means to be a developer and a publisher? Who better to ask? Scott Miller, that's who!
Oh and we asked him about Duke Nukem Forever too!

Re: Scott Miller Interview - The Man Who Would Be King?
After all the disappointments, I'm rather looking forward to DNF too - I got the definite impression that 3DRealms have really sorted themselves out for the project; some people are naturally going to feel disappointed, no matter what gets released, but if Prey was any indication then it should be fun at the very least.
The best thing about the interview was the refreshing honesty from Scott and the speed of his responses - if only I was that quick!

Re: Scott Miller Interview - The Man Who Would Be King?
I think this long development will work out well for them in th end. If they had tried to release DNF a few years ago, they never would have been able to deliver anything to match the hype. However, they've let it go on so long that the hype has pretty much disapeared and any release would be welcome so that when people to actually get it, people will be like hey, this game is actually pretty cool.

Re: Scott Miller Interview - The Man Who Would Be King?
RE: Scott's stance on the resale market. I will always support the informal, person-to-person, garage sale-type transfer of software. However, Scott's spot on: The film industry receives a cut from the brick and mortar rental/resale business, and so should the game industry. So the GameStop/EBGames of the world should be targeted, but never the consumer. The day a publisher goes after consumers who resell software is the day I stop purchasing software from such a publisher.
As far as DNF goes: I think 3DRealms have had their fair share of humble pie lately. When much of development staff left last year, all signs were pointing to a project which would never be completed.
This isn't directed at 3DRealms in particular, but game developers (and designers) often have very unrealistic expectations and seem to lack any real production software development experience. I understand that we're dealing with an art here, but the name of the game is carving a business out of the art of game design, and to that end a formal process has to be in place. It's called software engineering, not software artistry.
