World in Conflict
With World in Conflict, Massive Entertainment drop a daisy cutter bomb on entrenched real-time strategy franchises. Is it enough to flush them out, and force gamers and developers alike to rethink multiplayer real-time strategy, or just another RTS with blinding visuals?

Re: World in Conflict
Impressive review.
Oh, and based on that, now I *really* have to sneak in and ninja the game off Antti's desk...

Re: World in Conflict
Indeedy - I only picked up the game yesterday and I've been pleasantly surprised by the depth to the gameplay, especially in multiplayer mode. And it does look oh-so pretty when the bombs start flying...

Im using nvidia's newest beta drivers (dated september 21st) and everything is up to date on my pc, and freshly installed OS (winxp), etc....
wtf?

There are many variables that could cause slowdowns, but your description rules out most of them. Is the actual gameplay (not just a cutscene) very choppy on your system with the settings and resolutions you mentioned?
Try running the game's benchmark under graphics options, and compare the results with the ones we got with the YouGamers minimum system:
resolution - avg / min / max
1024x768 - 27 / 8 / 41
1280x1024 - 25 / 7 / 40
(averaged from three benchmark runs)
If nothing else, this'll rule out different subjective evaluations of a similar frame rate.

Re: World in Conflict
One variable that comes to mind with just 1GB RAM is the amount of background programs. If you have too much going on in RAM the game might have to dip to swapping to disk, and that turns any game into slideshow... and it might not show up on the benchmark as it's RAM usage may differ from the actual gameplay.

Fresh install, new components, nothing installed but the bare minimum (winamp, firefox, quake 3 :) )
I'm going to run memtest86+ for a 12 hour cycle tonight and see if my ram is an issue.

Memtest reported no problems, and I ran 3dmark and attained a score of 3014.
I was wondering if you had/could run 3dmark on the system you benchmarked it with and let me know what your rating was so I may further whittle this problem down. If not, no biggie, I can live without my system running as fast as it possibly can, and every other game I play runs pretty much flawlessly on even maxxed out settings.

Re: World in Conflict
Based on checking from ORB using the same components you have, the 3DMark06 score should be around 3000-3500.
Here is an example:

As it's a new install, you should probably check you have all the drivers installed with latest versions, including motherboard chipset drivers.
