Default Crysis

For the likes of Microsoft, NVIDIA and the enthusiast gamer, Crysis is the title for 2007. No other game for the beige box has garnered so much expectation, so many admiring glances and so many cries of "my poor PC!" With so much effort going into the graphics, there's a good chance that the gameplay took a dull, second stage. Firmly wearing visual blinkers, we review Crysis for what it actually is.

Agree with the review... at least from the demo! A visual tour de force indeed.

It took me playing the demo with a friend to actually realise how amazing it looks. I whacked everything up to Very high and was running at 1024 x 768 and it looked stunning.

We both took turns in shooting trees, watching them crack and then fall, noticing how the beams of sunlight streaming between the fronds followed the tree down, and how the foliage bounced as it hit the ground with just the right sense of weight.

He was amazed that you could see the pores on the Korean soldiers faces when you grab them... in fact we ended up have a discussion about how real games can get before shooting the hell out of your enemies becomes disturbing! Ah... philiosphical gamers... gotta love 'em eh?

It's always nice to have a good looking game, but the quality of the visuals in this somehow feel different and really affects the experience. Swimming under water and seeing how each fish interupts the beams of sunlight. Seeing your shadow on the bottom of the sea, even the light refraction looks... right.

And I think that's the thing. It all feels... right. The way things move, the way soldiers duck or flinch when you throw something at them, the way the bird pecks at your hand if you pick it up, everything to do with water is incredible, both on and under it.

I was concerned when I read it had a relatively short campaign. But the fact is that me and my mate ended up shooting trees for 10 minutes. And we loved it. Not many games can have that effect.

There is always the possibility that we're utterly sad gits. But I'll stick with the defence that the game's purdy. Real purdy...

It's VERY refreshing to see a game that is not a cheap console port !

As usual, I look from another angle.
I think that Crysis, the 8800GT, and the attempt to make XP look so weak with this game (Crysis) are continuations of the big upgrade push that kinda flopped last year with just Vista alone.
(Which unintentionally helped give us such nice ram prices)
Will it work? Looks like a definite win for Nvidia and Crytek so far. Be interesting to see if it works for Vista, too. Certainly though, Crytek deserves every success for its efforts.
