The review is mostly spot on.

The dozen of epochs and 14 civilizations are what made this game stand out. The reason it was so popular at our LAN was you could have great 4+ hour games spanning lots of Epocs. Makeing your own civilizations was also a fun part of the older games.

It was a great disappointment to see they took out everything that made the game unique and now its just a generic RTS.

(written purely from a multiplayer point of view, not tried single player)
