Default Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance

The original Supreme Commander challenged every aspect of a PC gamer: skill, patience and PC hardware. Unfortunately it was perhaps a bit too challenging as sales weren't that great but fear not! Here cometh the ubiquitous standalone expansion pack to fix problems, add new content, and boost the popularity of original, just in time for the holidays.

Can't wait to get it, I loved the first one. Although like stated, its very CPU depended and my X2 5000+ just crumbles when there are a few hundred units on the field. But nothing a few tactical missiles and long range cannons can't handle

Also the yougamers recommended system requirements show 7900 X1900. My HD3850 only played the first game at 40-55fps at max settings and slowed down to about 10fps when there where a load of units on the field. I thought this was my graphics card choking at first, but it was my CPU? So if I went Q6600 or something next year, the game won't perform slowly with a lot of units around?

Not sure what exactly you mean by lots of units, but if you play with for example 5 or more opponents (especially AI controlled ones) with a high unit cap, then things definitely will come to a crawl after a while. My 8800GT struggles just as much as what you describe, but by having a higher end CPU and in some cases more RAM this can be reduced.

Also: In SP mode pausing the game for a second helped in FA for some odd reason a lot at times.

When I mean lots of units. Well lets just say I play on Ians Cross against 3 teamed up Supreme AI and I set unit cap to say 1000 or more (I have a few mods). Usually all 3 AI go ballistic and create hundreds of units. And if you add them all together it totals about 1000 or more units. I have no troubles defending myself against that, the AI are so predictable and seem to only target one area which is the area they usually spot first, so I just build up my strongest defenses there and they just keep coming and dying. But my framerate will drop considerably from 50 to 10. I can play at these framerates on these types of games, but it does sometimes get annoying.

All I was saying is that the yougamers recommended requirements suggested a 7900. My HD3850 is a fair bit more powerful than a 7900, so I presume that this game is not GPU intensive. So having a faster, say quad core, it will probably still drop to those framerates but take much longer? (And with more RAM I suppose).

I could end a match again 3 Supreme AI in 30 minutes or less. I used to like playing against my mate on LAN, but I didn't like his strategy of creating 40+ T4 Cybrin flying metal bugs (I call them "bugs" for short). and wiping me out with them, as SAMS didn't help me at all. I could create 400+ SAMS and he would roll right over them, and interceptors where no match.

Anyways, can't wait to play FA
