3DMark Vantage vs. Games
The discussion on the validity of synthetic benchmarks over game benchmarks to determine video card performance is as old as the first synthetic benchmark, and you have probably heard it all before. Still, we took a stab at the issue. How exactly 3DMark Vantage does against a large set of "real world benchmarks" when trying to determine the performance of the latest hardware offerings from ATI and NVIDIA?

Re: 3DMark Vantage vs. Games
This article really makes the GTX 280 look like it dominates the competition, FM's words, when in reality it doesn't. It only really does in one benchmark. I don't really call <10% dominating at all. Only time will tell, and with new drivers, how narrow that gap can become. That aside, it does seem like Vantage does its job.
EDIT: OK 13%, but at 30-50% higher cost.

Yes, this article makes no mention of the price of any of these cards - that wasn't the point of it.
GTX 280 loses on the price-performance front badly. It's still the fastest card. Both of these things can be true at the same time :)

GTX 280 wins in almost every review. it`s clearly the fastest card and will continue to be so untill ati releases a new card....

Re: 3DMark Vantage vs. Games
Obviously the GTX 280 is a faster card overall. I don't deny that fact. My point is that 13% isn't really dominating. Toms Hardware did this review before any official drivers were out., and I'm sure that the gap will be closed quite a bit. Especially on UT3, it seems like poor driver code on that one, and GRID is actually within 2fps for both cards.
I went over the article and it does seem to indicate about an 8% overall lead for the GTX 280, and so does Vantage. So yes as for Vantage you guys seem spot on.
:D :D

Re: 3DMark Vantage vs. Games
Hey guys, I am not saying that the article is absolutely correct, but I have been blown away by the GTX 285 in games. My 3DMark 06 and Vantage scores didn't got through the roof, but everygame---and I mean everygame is beyond max settings---and here is the amazing power that I am talking about---Crysis and Crysis Warhead are Very High and Enthusiast settings with in game 4xAA on.
Prior to the GTX 285, when I had the 8800 GT's in sli---those games were set to high and gamer and couldn't even dare have AA enabled. Plus Far Cry 2 and Fallout 3 had some lag when fully maxed, yet now each game is maxed to the core 8xAA in both and not one hiccup in game play---smoother and just a whole lot more fun, but again my synthetic bench marks didn't just explode, but the game bench marks (like Far Cry 2, STALKER Clear Sky and Crysis have amazing bench marks).
When I look at my Vantage CPU score (39,000+) and yet GPU is much lower. I know that the marks are correct and baswed on your thoughts and other tests done around the web I found that my marks are even higher than some.
It is interesting how tests differ and systems differ and reach different marks. The fun behind being an enthusiast.

Re: 3DMark Vantage vs. Games
Interesting article, it shows 3DMark is still a very good way of comparing performance.
