World in Conflict final system requirements

The system requirements for Sierra's RTS World in Conflict have been updated, in the Game-o-Meter. It turns out that the requirements we obtained earlier are both accurate and highly misleading; however, the final requirements (off the game box) are now up.

While the box says: "Video: 128 MB video RAM, DirectX 9.0c compatible" - just as the requirements we received earlier - it also adds "DX9 minimum card NVIDIA GeForce 6600GT and above". Similarly the recommended "Video: 256MB video RAM, DirectX 9.0c-compatible" has received an additional note - "DX9 graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce 7600GT and above".

The final system requirements.

This case illustrates the difficulty of getting accurate system requirements up to the Game-o-Meter when publishers themselves can sometimes put out information that is misleading. In the case of minimum requirements, the original requirements meant that something like a NVIDIA GeForce Ti4400 would fit the bill - it is a "128MB video RAM DX9 compatible" card. Obviously it's a world apart from a GeForce 6600 GT though. The same goes for the comparison between the earliest 256MB DX9 cards (ATI Radeon 9600-series 256MB models or NVIDIA GeForce 6200 or 6600 LE) and something like a GeForce 7600 GT.

In addition to these notes, the box also specifies the minimum DX10 card - NVIDIA GeForce 8500GT - and the recommended DX10 card - NVIDIA GeForce 8600GT.

We'll get into far more detail with the actual, real-world hardware requirements of World in Conflict in a full YouGamers review, coming soon.

Actually the Ti4400 only supports up to DX8.1, so you would actually want something like the FX5200... Or perhaps there are even worse cards that support DX9?

Hey, if you happen to see Mr. Renqvist, tell him Richard says hello.

Compatible means it just supports the API; compliant is the word that's important (as this means it has to support the primary features that aren't in previous versions).

Good point. But wouldn't that mean that a GeForce 3 128MB card would be the bottom of the pit? Then again, they mentioned SM 1.4 in this interview,: http://www.yougamers.com/articles/4553_world_in_conflict_interview-page6/

Which makes me wonder, on which graphics card will it look and feel like... Canine excrement the most?

Hm... XGI Volari anyone?

True. Reason we used Ti4400 in the example was that 128MB memory requirement - most GeForce3s were 64MB cards, and in fact I can't recall ever seeing a 128MB GeForce 3. If there were any, feel free to correct my (faulty) memory.

And why not Ti4200 or Ti4600? That bit was mostly arbitary, I guess... In any case, GeForce 4s were the first cards that come to my mind as being mostly 128MB models.

As far as WiC goes - I guess it would, in theory, start on any card that supports SM1.1. Playable on anything that old? I doubt it. Our battery of hardware testing is still ongoing, and for WiC that's handled by Antti so I don't know what the word is yet...

The GF3 Ti-series had 128MB, ie: the Ti200 & Ti500.

Geforce 4 Ti doesn't support SM1.4. If theoretical shader requirement is 1.4, then GF4 Ti wouldn't be able to run it. The bare minimum would then be Radeon 8500. However, methinks the game would require SM3.0 to run, meaning that some of very powerful GPU's such as X800 XT won't be able to run it.

Meant 1.1. I need to brush up my video card history skills, it seems.

playing it on a nVidia 5500fx on 512 ram, and a Intel celeron D cpu

Required Vista??? Screw that

Neeyik 2007-09-24 #10
It only requires Windows Vista for the DX10 mode.

Curiosity has got the better of me here;
Has anyone ran it on a system similar to mine and what did u think ??

Athlon 64 3500+ (unclocked)
2gb DDR 400
Nvidia 6800 GT

Lookforward to your replies as I'm currently humming and arghing about World in conflict.
Cheers

In theory, it runs.

In practice, probably not playable.
