Portal GDC Impressions

The folks over at GameSpy have thrown together some impressions on Valve Software's upcoming first-person puzzle game, Portal, after getting a chance to check it out at this year's Game Developers Conference. For those of you not 'in the know', Portal and Team Fortress 2 will be included in the upcoming Half-Life 2: Episode Two expansion pack. So what's the scoop on this title? Read on:

After getting our hands on it, Portal felt like a puzzle game in the traditional sense, one in which the challenge lies in getting your character from point A to point B and dealing with obstacles and terrain as cleverly as possible. Your most important tool in dealing with this objective is a gravity gun that can create portals on non-metallic surfaces. These portals can be opened in order to force objects to travel where you desire them to, or to translocate your character to an otherwise inaccessible location. The obstacles impeding your path can range from deep pits and widely spaced platforms to rooms with metallic surfaces, requiring you to find appropriate targets for your portal gun or perhaps a pressure plate that can be triggered by an object snagged by your gravity beam.

You can also find more GDC impressions of Portal at the FiringSquad, GameSpot and PC.IGN.

While I'm sort of interested in Portal's concept, Team Fortress 2 is where my heart lies. Add on more Half-Life 2 content and this is a package I'll be keeping a very close eye on. w00t! :)
