Mass Effect & Spore To Require Online Activation

Creating some lively debate on the official Mass Effect message boards today, BioWare Technical Producer Derek French has confirmed that the upcoming PC edition of their hit RPG will require online activation every 10 days to play. Obviously this is an anti-piracy measure, but with it comes the anger of many connection-less gamers. Anyways, here's the scoop:

Mass Effect uses SecuROM and requires an online activation for the first time that you play it. Each copy of Mass Effect comes with a CD Key which is used for this activation and for registration here at the BioWare Community. Mass Effect does not require the DVD to be in the drive in order to play, it is only for installation.

After the first activation, SecuROM requires that it re-check with the server within ten days (in case the CD Key has become public/warez'd and gets banned). Just so that the 10 day thing doesn't become abrupt, SecuROM tries its first re-check with 5 days remaining in the 10 day window. If it can't contact the server before the 10 days are up, nothing bad happens and the game still runs. After 10 days a re-check is required before the game can run.

Later in the thread, French mentions that Maxis' Spore will be using the exact same system. Let the venting begin... :x

Sounds perfectly reasonable to me.

Very interesting...Obviously an anti-piracy move to say the least. I wonder how long it will take before this new system will be "cracked"? I think that this will upset some people who aren't connected to the web. Very interesting indeed...

I'm sure it does to most folk that take a home connection for granted. A necessary evil really, especially after the dismal sales of Crysis.

I don't really think that matters though.

Although I have zero statistical evidence to support this, I believe that the number of consumers who won't buy the game because they don't have an internet connection will be off-set by those who will buy the game because it can't* be cracked.

*Or, by those who buy it until it is cracked.

Spore, Mass Effect PC will require activation every 10 days in order to work

this is NUTS!!!

NoDKane 2008-05-06 #6
This is just another case where the person who buys it is at more of an inconvenience than the person that steals it. I mean it's not a big deal, online activation, I'm sure is practically instant but it's just weird to spend that much time/effort/money on something that is going to be broken.. probably before people can even have a chance to buy the game.

Radeon_Freak 2008-05-06 #7
I dont think its a problem to be honest. Who doesnt have the internet these days?

ThePhunkyOne 2008-05-06 #8
It always amazes me how much effort/time/money is put into anti-piracy measures, only to have it up cracked almost immediately, what was the other game that did this, was it bioshock?

Taking bets on how long before it appears online, 1 week before launch?

Is that a joke? I'm sure there will be a workaround either way, and I'm sure I would use that workaround after buying the game, or I wouldn't even bother with playing it.

While I'm sure the technical aspect of the workaround is hard to imagine in terms of sheer code, my friend and I already talked about this. A cracked exe that has the mechanism to communicate with the online server removed will enable the user to play the entire game. After all its a singleplayer game. The whole game is already on that disk.

Someone will find a workaround in less than a week that it will be out

I know i have not bought any PC games that have these bullshit copy protections that only punish the people who buy them. i stayed away from bioshock (would have bought it) and i stayed a way from some of the splintered cell series that had bad copy protection.

This is a bad move and one of the reason pc gaming is dying, i have no need for the extra hassels that come with this kind of copy protection.

What happens down the road when it becomes more costly to have the authentication server running for all people who bought this game?

darkblade088 2008-05-06 #13
They really wanna kill the sales to legit buyers ?

So if i buy spore but i dont have an internet connection on my gaming PC, i cant play lol

Without an internet connection, Spore would be rather boring anyway, since much of its content will come from other players.

What came first, piracy or copy protection? Piracy.

Read this news tidbit. Even though the revenue projections are skewed, it still demonstrates the scope of the problem, and why gaming companies are starting to diversify away from the PC platform.

You can moan all you want about copy protection, but they need to do something, inaction is not an option when it comes to piracy.

Running one or a dozen authentication servers is always going to be cheaper than losing millions of dollars in potential revenue.
