Alone In The Dark System Requirements
Atari's revival of the Alone in the Dark series is due in late June (June 20 for Europe, June 24 for the US) on the Xbox 360 and the PC. Set in the New York City with unexplained supernatural activity around the Central Park, Alone in the Dark tries to bring something new to the Survival Horror genre, with "episodic" gameplay - effectively the game is split into pieces that play out like episodes of a television series, complete with cliffhanger endings and teasers.
Built using the Twilight 2, the latest version of the engine used in Test Drive Unlimited, the system requirements are not that dramatic - what was "pretty steep" an year ago is not that high any more. Read on for the details, or use our Game-o-Meter to check if your system is good enough.
Alone in the Dark System Requirements
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Operating system: Windows XP SP2 / Windows Vista
- CPU: 2.8 GHz Intel Pentium 4 or Athlon 64 2800+
- Video Card: NVidia GeForce 7600 or ATI Radeon X1650 or better
- RAM: 1GB
- Disk space: 8.5GB
RECOMMENDED REQUIREMENTS
- Operating System: Windows XP SP2 / Windows Vista
- CPU: 3.4 GHz Intel Pentium 4 or AMD Athlon 64 3400+
- Video Card: NVidia GeForce 7800 GTX or ATI Radeon X1950 XTX or better
- RAM: 2GB
- Disk Space: 8.5GB
So effectively any dual core CPU will do, as even fast single cores are good enough while on the GPU front, Shader Model 3.0 is required, but by today's standards that's pretty much a given. Based on this, a $150 GeForce 9600 GT will run the game just fine.

Don't worry. We'll clean up the mess and IP ban where necessary. The decision to allow unregistered comments to YG news and articles was made with the full understanding that we need to weed out some trash - that's the price to pay to allow easy commenting. |

With EXACTLY the recommended settings (Pure hazard but that's what I have actually) the first levels of the game are totally awful because of huge lags and latencies ( And I don't speak about loading times if the game is not loaded in high-mode process ! )
I was a fan of the very first episodes, a very long time ago, then I am a little sad to complain about this one, but a few things might be said :
Well, yes, there are a lot of good gameplay ideas and nice visual effects here, and it is obvious ATARI made a lot of big efforts in trying to make a "good" game... But there are also a lof of incredible silly ideas spoiling the gameplay, and really too much latency problems regarding the results and what games such as Crysis, STALKER, etc... Are able today to display, without any lag, on the same computers !
Sluttering cameras, systematic not wanted changes for the point of view, really hard-to-move character, huge number of buttons when a few only would have been needed for the same actions ( Although I prefer PC games far than Xbox ones ! ), etc...
All these lacks are even worst than the optimization problems, so while both merged, you finally can enjoy some very spectacular scenes, but that's all : I won't believe anyone with the "recommended" hardware requirements telling me he is able to enjoy PLAYING ! : / |

I bought this a couple months ago, and exceed all the requirements except that I only have a single-core CPU (Athlon 64FX which is a little faster than a Pentium 3.4GHz Extreme Edition). Memory is very quick OCZ, drives are WD Raptors, GPU is only HD3850 512MB which is not too bad, etc. It is completely unplayable - it runs fine for a few seconds, then crawls, and often hangs. I have to start it by setting the executable's CPU priority to 'HIGH'.
I've requested help repeatedly from Atari, and they have yet to respond (unless you count all the autoresponses, for which they've been just 'fabulous').
I am only posting this to warn potential purchasers that there's some unresolved issues out there, and they may want to get a confirmation from Atari (somehow) or at least know someone that will buy the game from them if they can't run it. It looks cool when the screen is moving. Unfortunately, I've never seen more than about 3/4 through the intro sequence. Maybe Atari starts responding in person after three months, and I'll be able to get this going. |

(Sorry if these posts show up repeatedly, but the captcha engine gives you no feedback, so I'm trying different things each time...)
