Age of Conan Reaches 700,000 Subscribers
Finally tonight, Funcom and Eidos Interactive have announced that more then 700,000 people have signed up for an Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures account since its launch back in May, which they claim makes it the "undisputed #2 subscription MMO in the western world." Here's the official word:
Eidos and Funcom are proud to announce that Age of Conan continues to dominate the PC sales charts in all markets where the game is available. Over the last few weeks the game has remained the overall #1 PC game in most European markets, whilst also performing tremendously well on several all-format charts. In the US, Age of Conan impressively conquered the #1 PC spot for the first two weeks of available NPD data. Due to the amazing interest surrounding the game, more than 700,000 gamers have now signed up for an Age of Conan account. In the second month after release it is also clear that Age of Conan has taken the position as the undisputed #2 subscription MMO in the western world.
When Age of Conan stormed into retail stores as what we believe to be the most pre-ordered original PC game in history, it instantly became the best selling PC game of May. The pace at which Age of Conan sold made it one of the fastest selling PC games of all times, and Funcom and Eidos are very satisfied to see the positive sales trend continue. As all countries report sales differently, it is not possible to get a complete overview of the exact box sales at the time of writing, but Age of Conan remains the top selling PC game in the majority of all released markets. This includes being the #1 overall PC game in June in the Nordic countries, Oceania, Germany, France and Spain, as well a top three contender in all other markets where the game is out. No substantial sales data for June is yet available from the US market, but Age of Conan was the #1 PC game in the latest official NPD update.
“That Age of Conan remains #1 in retail stores several weeks after release is of incredible importance to us, and proves that the game has a large potential beyond the early adopters,” said Morten Larssen, VP of Sales & Marketing in Funcom. “With more than 700,000 accounts created so far we have a fantastic platform to build from, and we will continue to market the game to further drive numbers in the months to come. It also means that Funcom can dedicate significant development resources on evolving the game even further, naturally giving us a great hope for the future of Age of Conan.”
“We are incredibly pleased to see Age of Conan turning into an MMO phenomenon,” said Gaute Godager, Game Director on Age of Conan. “As an MMO company we know that a good start is just the beginning for a virtual world. All we care about now is to make Age of Conan into an even better game, and we have extensive plans to ensure that Age of Conan remains a top MMO alternative for many years to come.”

| Wish they would disclose their subscriber numbers, instead of "sign up" numbers. Sign up numbers are a poor metric because they never go down... |

| Desparately trying to make it look good. At least Blizzard reports their subscribers by active accounts rather than sold boxes. |

There's no monthly payment so there's no comparison. |

I would also like to see those numbers but i also understand why they don´t choose to go public with those just yet. It was only two weeks ago the first players started to play with subscriptions.
How many of those players managed to get the game on day one? From that day on until today the game has sold 700.000 copies. So i think it would be more interesting to get real numbers a month from now. We know that as per today 700.000 copies have been sold so it would be pretty easy to count the churn if we get the numers of subscribers next month. |

Agreed. I'm sure I'm only one of MANY people who bought it, tried it, and went back to WoW. Claiming the #2 MMO spot based on boxes sold is rubbish. 700,000 copies sold of a game is NOT impressive. Plenty of games have outsold that. |

WoW includes inactive accounts, it's been public knowledge for quite a long time?
Guys, Blizzard failed with WoW, I know, it was hard for me to accept Blizzards failure, but...well...no one is perfect sadly.
Age of Conan looks to be shaping up finely, can't wait. Alot of people are quiting cause they're crappy WoW machines(With 2001 specs) can't run the game, and it has bugs, oh wow.
Do you guys know how BAD the WoW launch was? I was there, yes, I was there, it was as bad, if not worse, so don't go comparing a 4 year solid game to a game that just started, because who knows? I don't think it'll be a WoW killer(Spec requirements for one), but it will def so well and be around for awhile. It's my only option, with other MMOS failing, I must look at this light in the darkness...why Blizzard, why did thou' fail with WoW? |

Care to quote where it's said WoW includes inactives?
Last I heard, the WoW numbers are accounts that have been logged on in the last 30 days, minus any free trial accounts (those "download now and try for free for 14 days" things)
http://www.massively.com/2008/01/22/...llion-players/
A subscriber, according to Blizzard, is someone who has "paid a subscription fee or have an active prepaid card to play World of Warcraft, as well as those who have purchased the game and are within their free month of access."
That number notably doesn't count promo subscriptions, expired accounts, canceled subscriptions, or unused prepaid cards. They are counting 'PC Bang' players by considering an account active if it has been used within the last 30 days. Subscribers that connect to the game under licensees like The9 are counted under the same guidelines. |

Why people always compare to wow, that game is out for ages and has nothing to offer anymore, the speed of adding lvls and contetn is so damn slow that everyone is epic, last time i checked out a BG in WoW 80% of the people where in seasons 2 1% was just 70 and 19% hat some kind of mix of seasons and other epic gear.
AOC just started WoW hat plenty of problems at start, after 6 weeks playing i was 60 and only thing i could do is gank or instance in those few instances that where working, took years before WoW became decent and now the content pace is to slow.
I hope they have a trial after they get rit of most bugs, i get borred easely i gues i should not play mmo's, that LOTRO was borring to, looked dated and just like wow u can spent ages on vinding a certain quest place or mob, ending up in mass alt tabbing to the internet. |

But in all seriousness I feel AOC needs a lot of work before it can be a true challanger to to the Godzilla that is WoW. Right now all it is is a midget kicking WoW's toe. |

| I really hate people who complain about AoC's launch, and forget about WoW's craptastic launch with so many bugs it was nearly unplayable for the first month. AoC seems to follow that trend, so let's see how it goes. It may not kill WoW, but it is a significant MMO to bring out these numbers. Sales wise, it's impressive just for that. MMO wise, I mean. |

I played in the European WoW beta and launch too. I remember there were some problems with making an account because the servers were loaded. Might have been minor server instability during the first week. Other than that, I don't remember any problems with the game itself, at all. The low-level content seemed practically bug free to me (<20 level content). Then again I remember that the US launch (it was a bit earlier?) had huge problems with servers.
That said, I'm very happy playing LOTRO now. Even happier after testing AoC heh. |

| I loved WoW for 3 years, i still love it. its a supperb game, but IMO AoC has given me more. Yes AoC players are leaving and more are coming, but WoW didnt start out at 10million subscribers! they didnt hit 1 mil for around a year i think. i could be wrong, but i dont think so. Then there was also the free week of gameplay i got from WoW back shortly after release because they were unable to keep servers up for a normal period of time. The fact is simple, MMO's have GARBAGE launches. its the around 3 months after the game comes out that you see what the game is. and so far i am enjoying this game, it gives me an old school Ultima Online feel to it. I just cant wait till it is complete it will be better than anything else onthe market. And until then im gonna continue to play, cause its fun. If you dont like it you dont. but dont be a fanboi of WOW or AOC. EQ, WOW, UO, they all had bad launches, but did VERY WELL. |
