StarCraft 2 Singleplayer Campaign Now A Trilogy

Dropping a bombshell tonight, Blizzard Entertainment has announced that StarCraft 2's singleplayer campaign will be split up into three separate products, one for each of the game's factions. The first product out the door will feature the Terran campaign, titled "Terrans: Wings of Liberty". At some point after that (no dates are given), they'll launch "Zerg: Heart of the Swarm", followed by "Protoss: Legacy of the Void". According to ShackNews' on-the-scene report, the second and third titles will act as stand-alone expansions with "enough content to justify a full release". No word if these will be fully priced products or not. We'll keep you posted!

Seriously, they better not charge full price for each instalment, that will be a really big screw job to the fan base.

I wonder how multiplayer will work if you only buy 1 of the campaigns - buy zerg and only play zerg on bnet?

I could see if they charged Full price for the 1st game and half for the next 2.

But then again they could use some excuse like each game works on its own separately with all the features, which kinda makes them like the different versions of Pokemon that come out at a time.

I just see that as them trying to milk their product. They've never done that in the past, and there's really not much reason to do it now. The campaign's better be at least 10 hours each.

Smart move. It gives theme extra time to work on additional single player content without delaying the whole game - and this way they can charge more on the whole thing in total - and people will pay. Blizzard's games are usually so good :)

I personally expect normal 40-50$ main game and 20-30$ expansions, with the main game going down in price once expansions come, and "battle chest" style combo box replacing it at full price. Just look at WoW box pricing model... Original WoW box is now 15$ but the full "WoW+expansions" box is still full price (well, it will be once WoW+TBC+Wrath box comes in a month)

This also helps introduce people to digital download stuff. I'm sure SC2 is the first Blizzard game that will be available online on launch day digitally, and same will be true for the expansions. Bringing the WoW style tie to online service even for a game that would not truly need it.

Blizzard understands the business... and yes, this is bit of big news - more than anything they non-announced at the opening ceremony :)

This move is like a double edge sword, but mainly for the benefit on blizzard's end.

If it means that each singleplayer campaign is 2-3 times as long and good as they would've been as one game, and if it means that SC2 will arrive 6-12 months earlier than otherwise (with the expansions arriving over the next 12-18 months), it's benefit to the player.
