Monkey Island Returns - Tales of the Monkey Island

Lucasarts drops the first bomb of the E3 week by announcing the return of Monkey Island. Two projects are under development. Telltale Games, best known for Sam & Max series is developing an episodic Tales of Monkey Island game series. Five monthly episodes will come on PC and Wii (as WiiWare). Lucasarts will also publish a Special Edition of The Secret of Monkey Island - a remake of the very first Monkey Island game with modern visuals and audio! The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition will be published on PC and XBox 360 (Xbox Live Arcade), with the PC version coming as a digital download only as well.

And... the first one of these, Tales of Monkey Island will premiere July 7 and the whole season of 5 episodes is available for preorder now for $34.95 with monthly digital download of each episode and a collector's DVD once all five have been released.

The Special Edition of the first Monkey Island is scheduled for "Summer 2009".

Read on for details and quotes from the official press release.

Tales of the Monkey Island Press Release snip:

Telltale's Tales of Monkey Island brings the adventures of pirate Guybrush Threepwood into a new era with an explosive storyline that becomes deeper and more entangled during the course of the five-episode saga. While battling his nemesis, the evil pirate LeChuck, Guybrush accidentally unleashes an insidious voodoo pox that threatens to transform the buccaneers of the Caribbean into unruly pirate monsters. Players will experience the humor, romance, and swashbuckling action the Monkey Island games are famous for and unravel an insidious plot which is revealed across the course of the series. Tales of Monkey Island is set to premiere on PC and WiiWare in the coming weeks.

"The Monkey Island series set the standard for storytelling and character development in games," said Telltale CEO Dan Connors. "The next several months should be filled with all kinds of surprises as we continue the dramatic stories of Guybrush, Elaine and LeChuck. We are happy to be working with LucasArts to make this happen."

The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition Press Release snip:

Back by popular demand, The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition faithfully re-imagines the internationally-acclaimed classic game (originally released in 1990) for original and new audiences alike. The development team at LucasArts is bringing the game into the modern era with all-new HD graphics, a re-mastered musical score, full voiceover, and an in-depth hint system has been added to help players through the game’s side-splitting puzzles. Purists will also delight in the ability to seamlessly switch between the updated HD graphics and the original’s classic look.

This is truly an incredible surprise, especially since both games are coming in just a couple of months. Plus you can play the special edition in authentic mode that is exactly the same as the original game. How Lucasarts managed to keep it all under wraps this long is incredible... I can't wait!

Update: On a related note, Ron Gilbert has published his thoughts on the news at his Grumpy Gamer blog. He takes an interesting trip down the memory lane, commenting on various bits of Secret of the Monkey Island. Very interesting read.

I have always wanted monkey island to come back. Monkey Island 2 is probably one of my favorite games from my childhood. This game looks very 3dish like monkey island 4 which has me worried. I though monkey 4 was the worst of them all and was a disappointment. Hopefully Telltale can prove me wrong on this one.
