WoW Faction-Change Service Coming
Keeping busy today, Blizzard Entertainment has revealed that they're working on a new service for their hit MMORPG, World of WarCraft, which will allow players to change their character's faction from Horde to Alliance or vice versa. No word on when the service will launch, but they do state it will come with some strict rules to maintain "the gameplay experience on the realms". Here's the scoop:
We wanted to give everyone a very early heads-up that, in response to player requests, we’re developing a new service for World of Warcraft that will allow players to change their faction from Alliance to Horde or Horde to Alliance. There’s still much work to do and many details to iron out, but the basic idea is that players will be able to use the service to transform an existing character into a roughly equivalent character of the opposing faction on the same realm. Players who ended up creating and leveling up characters on the opposite factions from their friends have been asking for this type of functionality for some time, and we’re pleased to be getting closer to being able to deliver it.
As with all of the features and services we offer, we intend to incorporate the faction-change service in a way that won’t disrupt the gameplay experience on the realms, and there will be some rules involved with when and how the service can be used. The number of variables involved increases the complexity of implementing this service, but we plan to take the time needed to ensure that it lives up to expectations before officially rolling it out. We’ll go into much more detail on all of this here at http://www.WorldofWarcraft.com as development progresses. In the meantime, we wanted to let you know that because this type of functionality requires extensive internal testing well in advance of release, you may be seeing bits and pieces of the service in the test builds we use for the public test realms moving forward.
Better be some air-tight rules! Would suck if it threw off realm balance. And I wonder what kind of fee they'll charge. ;)

Alright, this can be game breaking and this can be the best thing to ever happen to wow... here's some situations I can see with this limited information we have received so far.
Option 1)
Your high level Alliance Night Elf Warrior character can become a Horde Night Elf Warrior.
Option 2)
Your high level Alliance Night Elf Warrior character can become any of the Horde races with the same class. (ie Tauren Warrior, Orc Warrior, etc.)
Option 3)
Both option 1 & 2. (oh my word)
Blue doesn't mention anything about faction-race change so I suspect that Blizzard is going with Option 1 where your Gnome, Dwarf, Draenei, Night Elf, and Human can become Horde and abandon all Alliance ways.
Not only will this result in total confusion in PvP, the utter and complete destruction of the unique factions will be destroyed as a result of this being implemented. This started in late 2006 with the Shaman being available on Alliance and Paladin on Horde.
My theory is Blizzard is purposely running this game into the ground to make way for the "next-gen MMO" which I hope is officially announced with a real name at Blizzcon 2009. |

I would find it highly surprising if they went with option 1. The post says 'transform an existing character into a _roughly equivalent character_ of opposite faction', which to me clearly says that your night elf warrior will become a blood elf warrior or so. This is the simplest approach for them as well - they just create a new character of appropriate level, move all the equipment from the old to to the new and delete the old one.
I see no reason why this would not be a good thing. The example in the post of being on the other side than your friends is something that is very likely to happen - I've had that happen. Similarly, I have an alliance character I never play anymore since all my buddied are in Horde. If and when this becomes available, I can active that character as well. |

I hear ya, after reading it over again it probably will be that approach you describe and is not game breaking like the option 1 I described. |

The only theoretically bad thing I can see is if faction balances get borked - and I'm sure they'll add a fine print that prevents the faction switch to the bigger side on a very lopsided server or something...
That would still give you the option of switching to another server via paid transfer and switching there and it would protect against 10:1 ratios. |

Alright so Blizzard finally released more data concerning faction change after getting so many questions their forum nearly imploded.
http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/th...geNo=1&sid=1#0
Q. Will we be able to switch between the races on our own faction?
A.. No. Players will only be able to switch to a race of the opposite faction.
Q. Will I be able to choose the race on the opposite faction that I want to change to?
A.. Yes, but you will only be able to switch to a race that has your class type available to it. So if you play a human paladin, you’d only be able to change to a blood elf paladin.
Thank goodness they aren't making both faction sides universal by having Horde Gnomes or Alliance Taurens. What a mess that would have been. |
