Need for Speed: SHIFT 'Car Battle' Trailer

Getting our adrenaline pumping this afternoon, Slightly Mad Studios have released a new teaser trailer for their upcoming racing title, Need for Speed: SHIFT. Clocking in at a minute and a half long, the video focuses on the new Car Battle mode, which pits various types of cars against each other to find out 'which is the greatest'. Check it out:

Thanks to GameTrailers for the above stream. A mirror is also available at the FileShack.

Need for Speed: SHIFT is scheduled for release in North America on September 15th and Europe on September 17th.

Well, it looks good graphically, but why do I get the sense that it will turn out to be a dissapointment. Let's just hope there's less of EA and more Simbin influence.

Here's an interesting bit of info I found:

Desipite the impressive hardware setup, the writers of one of Germany’s biggest gaming mags did not seem to be very much impressed with Shift juding by the following statement:

The racing seat did give you the feeling of sitting in a real car as the forces are pulling you in different directions depending on if you´re breaking or accelerating. Combine that with the great sounds and Shift does indeed feel very real. On the other hand, the graphics and the arcadish gameplay were kind of a let down. The TripleHead2Go system did offer a good optical presentation, the graphics never met the quality that could be seen in the trailers though. The Xbox 360 version was even worse, sporting blurry textures without AF and lots of Aliasing.

(info found at http://www.virtualr.net/need-for-spe...ery-impressed/)

So much for being a simulation as we were led to believe.

They get a point there about the graphics not being as cool as in the trailers. You can verify that with some of the gameplay videos around.

Also, I don't get why this is call NFS. There is nothing of NFS in it...

It is called BRANDING.

NFS has been used for so many different car games that I'm sure by now everyone has forgotten what Need For Speed originally meant.

Really old farts might remember also the original Test Drive.

It was all about driving ridiculously expensive cars at silly speed in normal traffic along epic routes with pretty environments, with cops adding to the challenge.

I think NFS Porsche Unleashed was the last real NFS game. Since then, EA has pushed out just crap under the brand. Some may have been passable car games, but none really qualify for the Need For Speed label.

The reason why they don't go back to thier roots is because EA believes they need to make a game "pop" with un-needed modes (such as crashing and other arcade like settings with "flash"), so as to attract the typical 12 year old which is thier primary target focus (apparently). To be fair, it works to an extent but tarnishes the brand.

I can just picture thier marketing head saying to his/herself - "why aren't we as highly regarded as GT5 or Forza?" hmmm....
