Carmack Reveals id's New Game Engine

Making a surprise appearance at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference today, awestruck fans cheered as id Software's John Carmack hopped on stage to reveal their new game engine technology called "id Tech 5". The demonstration featured a highly detailed outdoor race track that Carmack claims uses 20gigs of unique textures. Following up on how the engine handles textures, he commented:

They can go in and look at the world and, say, change the color of the mountaintop, or carve their name into the rock. They can change as much as they want on surfaces with no impact on the game.

The presentation ended with Carmack announcing plans to show the engine again at this year's E3. But enough with the details, check out out Engadget's WWDC coverage for some screen caps of the id Tech 5 engine! (scroll down a little)

Thanks ksimm!

Update: Making things "official", id Software have sent out a press release announcing the id Tech 5 engine. Here's a snippet:

The new id rendering technology practically eliminates the texture memory constraints typically placed on artists and designers and allows for the unique customization of the entire game world at the pixel level, delivering virtually unlimited visual fidelity. Combined with a powerful new suite of tools designed specifically to facilitate and accelerate the content creation process, id Tech 5 will power games that contain vast outdoor landscapes that are completely unique to the horizon, yet have indoor environments with unprecedented artistic detail.

Apparently the E3 showing will be for "interested developers and publishers by appointment only". :(
