Manhunt 2 gets the chop in the UK

The Register are reporting that Rockstar's Manhunt 2 title for the PS2 and Wii has been essentially banned in the UK, because the BBFC have refused to certify it because of "its unremitting bleakness and callousness of tone in an overall game context which constantly encourages visceral killing with exceptionally little alleviation or distancing." Sounds like how I feel after an episode of Eastenders...

So let me get this straight then? It's okay, according to the BBFC, for people 18 years of age or older to go and watch Saw III? The same people can join the armed forces and kill people or consume enough alcohol to completely oblitorate their brains to the point that they don't remember the previous night of violence and mayhem but play a video game because "[t]he Board's carefully considered view is that to issue a certificate to Manhunt 2... would involve a range of unjustifiable harm risks, to both adults and minors, within the terms of the Video Recordings Act, and accordingly that its availability, even if statutorily confined to adults, would be unacceptable to the public"?

Seriously BBFC, what planet do you live on?
