On November 5th (for North America; November 9th for European territories), the Call of Duty series makes its long-awaited return to the PC. After skipping a release on the PC - the much-maligned Call of Duty 3 was a console-only release, to the dismay of no one – the fourth installment of the action-heavy combat FPS is back where it should be, in mouse-and-keyboard territory. What's more, developer Infinity Ward is back at the helm, and they're poised to deliver a true AAA experience following the forgettable release of Call of Duty 3 (which was farmed out to Treyarch). Subtitled Modern Warfare, Call of Duty 4 also moves the series well beyond its World War II roots and onto a battlefield of today. It's a sea change indeed, and after months of drooling over trailers and screenshots, PC gamers finally have an opportunity to play Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare in the form of a demo.
E3 2007 Trailer
Back in Action and Out of the TrenchesThe reception that Call of Duty 4 received at E3 this year was largely fawning, with an impressive cinematic trailer helping to build the hype to a fever pitch. In this regard, the demo doesn't disappoint, offering almost non-stop action from start to finish. The firefights are intense and the combat is perfectly paced, with appropriate lulls in the action which allow you to collect your wits for the next objective. Few details of the meta-story are revealed, though if previous Call of Duty games are any indication, then the game will feature an authentic-feeling narrative that is played out using in-game cutscenes. World War II tends to have a nostalgic, patriotic feel, so it remains to be seen whether a present-day story will be as compelling.
