If my years on this planet have taught me anything, it's that there's enjoyment to be had in the refined pleasures of life, be it a sip of hors d'age cognac, a ride in a classic luxury automobile, or a few hours of live jazz. Unfortunately, my station wagon doesn't classify as "luxury", I don't care for cognac and I can't stand jazz. My guilty pleasure is both less expensive and less subtle: pure, unadulterated FPS deathmatch. And like Courvoisier, Bentley and John Coltrane, Unreal Tournament is a classic. Along with Quake 3 Arena, Unreal Tournament is one of the granddaddies of multiplayer-centric FPS gore-fests. Next month, the highly anticipated Unreal Tournament 3 will hit store shelves. Epic's fast-paced, Unreal-engine powered multiplayer FPS hasn't seen a release since 2004. It's a new generation of gaming, and the PC multiplayer scene is a crowded one. Will Unreal Tournament 3 uphold the series' stellar reputation? YouGamers takes a brief look at the demo release and offers some first impressions.

E3 2007 Trailer

Ready.. Fight!

The Unreal Tournament 3 demo is actually a beta release, so some rough edges are to be expected. Additionally, many features and game modes are missing. With these caveats in mind, the demo does offer an enticing first look at what Epic has in store for the full release, scheduled on the PC for November (with Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 versions following in late 2007 or early 2008). Available in the demo are four modes: Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Duel and Vehicle Capture the Flag. Each mode can be played online or with the very capable bots. Two deathmatch maps are included in the demo, Heat Ray and Shangri La, along with one Vehicle CTF map, Suspense. The single-player campaign is absent from the demo, as are standard CTF and the new Unreal Warfare mode, which promises large-scale team-based combat.
