Shattered Horizon - GC 08 Preview

Futuremark Games Studio is showing their first game, Shattered Horizon, at the Leipzig Games Convention this week. Information published so far on the official site is a tad light on details, but we now have some additional bits as YouGamers got to see an early build of the game and ask some questions from the development team. It's still early days for the game, and understandably they can't spill the beans on everything just yet, but we got some additional details out of the developers.

It should be noted that YouGamers got to watch the presentation just like any other member of the press - while both Futuremark Games Studio and YouGamers are owned by Futuremark, the teams are separate and this was the first time I saw the game in action. Sure, as YouGamers staff works out of the same building as Futuremark Games Studio, I had heard some bits about the game's premise and seen couple of concept images earlier, but the game development team had kept me away on purpose. You see, to them I am "that evil press guy that does those reviews that always tell how everything sucks". Perhaps they fear me... anyway, this was actually the first time I have seen what they have been working on in action.

First Impressions

Need an asteroid belt around Earth? Easy...

My first impression was very positive - it's amazing how much they've managed to put together so far. What was shown looked very good and the pretty visuals actually moved smoothly as well - so those of you pondering how to train for headshots at 2fps should not worry. When I first heard about the setting for the game being "asteroids in Earth orbit" I wondered how on earth they plan on explaining that one away, but they went the extra mile and blew up the Moon to solve that little problem...

Antti Summala, the Lead Designer actually went on for quite a while explaining the setting and stressing the fact that the dev team has done their homework - it's a game, but it's very much based on reality. They even calculated all the details about the hypothetical shattering of the Moon as seen in the teaser trailer, and that's why you can see the "32x" indicator in the trailer - the scale is so huge that the video from such an explosion would appear to be glacially slow - so the news coverage plays back the explosion at 32x speedup.

Shattered Horizon is a team-based first-person shooter, pitting the evil mining corporation based on the Moon against what's left of the infrastructure in Earth orbit. The exact map sizes are not yet finalized, but the aim is to have at least 32 players battling it out and the game mode shown involved teams capturing control points. I asked about further details and other game modes, but the team refused to bite. The area shown was only a part of a map, and the exact gameplay details were still under wraps. They said they'll concentrate first on perfecting the gameplay with the control point game mode they were showing.

That's some view, and the sense of depth is even greater in motion.

Still images can't do justice to the objects glittering in the harsh sunlight, slowly spinning in zero-G.
