Army crossing a shallow river.

In summary, Galactic Assault is not a horribly bad game by any means, but it feels a bit crude and there is a distinct lack of style in the visuals. Graphics, while technically passable, are simple and low on polygons. Since we are talking about turn based strategy game, visuals are not that important, but as a review has to take into account all aspects of the game, complaints about them can't be avoided.

The gameplay is also fairly hardcore, and after the first few training missions, the campaign takes a very swift turn to the hard side. While you can set the difficulty level, it appears that all it changes is the available units and perhaps tones down the AI a bit. The same tight turn limits remain on timed missions, and the AI is still quite capable of kicking my butt even on Easy.

Anyway, if you enjoy turn-based strategy, by all means, at least check out the demo. The full game is available for purchase both in stores as a traditional boxed version, and on GamersGate as a downloadable version.

Scores

Gameplay 81 Quite good turn-based strategy title, but the small maps and heavily scripted missions feel a bit restrictive and the difficulty settings feel like "Hard", "Very Hard" and "Are you nuts?"
Graphics 61 Tries to use some visual effects to spice things up but it's just bland and seriously lacking polish and style.
Audio 63 Repetitive music, weak effects and voiceovers - not that the audio matters much in a strategy game.
Technology 75 Runs completely maxed at the listed minimum hardware and scales even lower if needed, but fails to really take advantage of today's hardware in any way.
OVERALL
69
Turn-based strategy titles are a rare breed these days, but sadly Galactic Assault is both visually and aurally sub-par and is just a bit too hardcore for my taste. Worth checking out the demo if you enjoy the genre.
