Ten years ago, Chris Taylor's Total Annihilation hit the scene with a new take on real-time strategy. Way ahead of its time, Total Annihilation overwhelmed a lot of players and CPUs with its huge, faceless, mechanized armies. Now it is time for TA to make a comeback, and bog down most of today's computers. Enter Supreme Commander.

The game opens with a hopeful notion: a fresh start. Technology that transcends Humanity from Earth could wipe away old grievances and give us a world of unlimited resources and space, and with this abundance, a promise of lasting peace. History suggests otherwise, though, as the introduction laconically states: "eventually, Humanity's more base instincts took hold". Letting us loose in the galaxy could turn it into a chaotic battlefield, where aggression spreads wherever humans do. Supreme Commander and its predecessor both study this dystopian future of perpetual violence, and the message has not changed in ten years.

Rifts in space and ideology have divided the galaxy into three factions: the militaristic United Earth Federation or UEF, the Cybran nation of part human, part machine Symbionts, and the fanatically religious Aeon Illuminati. The UEF wants to bring order to the galaxy by force of arms. Military pathos and an absolute belief in their cause are their hallmarks. The Cybran nation wants to liberate Symbionts still serving under UEF, slaves of their programming. The real-world inspiration behind the Cybrans is made pretty obvious: formerly enslaved workers looking to liberate their brothers, an all-red color scheme and even a superior officer who speaks with a Russian accent. The Aeon are people enlightened to their creed, The Way, by a now-extinct alien race, and will stop at nothing - not even genocide - to make sure that their peaceful beliefs are the only ones left in the Universe.

The actors are now assembled, and the stage is set. Let's see how Supreme Commander plays out, shall we?
