I'm not much of a golfer, and I don't play one on TV. Heck, I don't even watch golf on TV. But I did give a less-than-honest attempt to learn the game at the age of 10, when my grandfather gave me a set of clubs for my birthday. The end result was a golf bag full of bent and broken clubs, a testament to my lack of patience. Oddly enough, I did have patience for another hobby: computers. In the seminal golf simulation Links 386, a Mulligan was only a mouse click away. As the Links series died a slow and painful death over a period of years, another series moved to fill its place. With the help of branding from the sport's most recognizable player, EA Sports' Tiger Woods PGA Tour series is now the only course in the county, so to speak.

Tiger, the '08 Edition

In keeping with EA Sports tradition, Tiger Woods PGA Tour is an annual release. Yearly releases are to be expected for most sports titles, where updated team rosters alone are worth the price of admission for dedicated fans. But there aren't any teams in golf, so EA must update and add to the game itself to move copies. Some features – True Swing, for instance - have since become staples of the series, but others, such as the Tiger Proofing course customization options, don't make the grade and are removed from future titles.

This year's Tiger Woods PGA Tour release doesn't offer much in the way of new features, and gameplay changes are minor There are some shake-ups in the player roster and course selection, and the interface has been given a re-working. The only real addition to gameplay is the Confidence system, which factors experience into individual shots. Inexplicably, Photo Game Face, which allows players to import pictures of themselves and apply them to player models, is missing from the PC version. Surely Photo Game Face would be just as popular on the PC?

Out of the bunker an onto the green. Is the '08 release of Tiger Woods PGA Tour worth your while?
