Paradox Entertainment is well-known for its complex and ambitious strategy titles such as Victoria, Hearts of Iron and the Europa Universalis series. With Europa Universalis III, the stated goal of the developers was to make the game more approachable for the uninitiated, and it's hard to deny it - EU3 is much easier to pick up and play than the earlier Europa Universalis titles.

One thing hasn't been changed though - Europa Universalis III can definitely be called ambitious. The scope of the game is immense, as you have the whole world between the years 1453 and 1789 to play with, and the whole real history is included in the game in impressive detail. Surprisingly there are no set goals, and it's up to the player to choose what he wishes to set his goals to be. There are some introductory preset dates that serve as scenarios with some background on the starting situation, and suggestions on interesting countries to play, but that's it.

When the game starts, EU3's engine creates the situation on the map based on the selected start date and the real history, so having some passing familiarity with the history is definitely an asset. But as soon as the game starts, the history book can be tossed overboard. Yes, there are some trends that are derived from the starting parameters and some historical events can and will occur also in the alternate history that the player creates as the game progresses. For example if you play as England, in most time periods you start with France being either at war with you, or there exists an uneasy truce and high odds of new hostilities. Similarly it's very hard to turn a backwater African nation into a military powerhouse capable of taking on Europeans overnight due to the differences in the level of technology available.

EU3 has definitely been designed to be played mainly as one of the European nations, but it does support playing any one of the 250+ nations present in the game. It's just that some of them are nearly impossible to start with, should your chosen goal be world domination or something equally ambitious, and at the very least new players should stick with established superpowers of the chosen age.
