Viewports, sticks and knobs

"Cleared to land" in a Cessna 172 virtual cockpit

As most current graphics adapters have multi-monitor capability, you might consider hauling your old CRT monitor from the basement and hooking it up for an enhanced Flight Simulator experience. The default "virtual cockpit" view in the game leaves much to be desired, as you really can't see outside as well as you'd like. At the same time, the instruments are not very readable and half of the required gadgets are not visible by default. By adding a second display you get the option to dedicate one display for the visuals and the other for the instruments. As the instruments are 2D, they won't require a lot of attention from the graphics card, and thus the extra screen space won't cost much in terms of game performance.

Another thing worth noting are the controls. Controlling an aircraft with a keyboard or mouse is somewhat tricky and does not provide the best gaming experience with the Flight Simulator X. If you're into flying, you should definitely consider purchasing a joystick to really enjoy this game. Most available joystick models feature both rudder and throttle control, so they're just what the doctor ordered. Or, you can go ahead and get yourself a Yoke/Pedal/Throttle quadrant and really become the virtual pilot you've always wanted to be! It'll cost you, mind you, but as we all know, money is what keeps real aircraft in the air too.

New and improved

In addition to the overall graphics and visual enhancements, Flight Simulator X contains numerous improvements all over. There's more computer generated traffic in the air and now on the ground too, built-in Air Traffic Controllers have better voice quality and more to say, and the new Garmin G1000 "glass" cockpit is available in a few select aircraft. Some aircraft have their various systems modeled more accurately, and some instruments work more like their real-world counterparts. Multiplayer features have also been improved: you now have the option to join in a global air traffic system via the net and perhaps even establish your own virtual airline. Most of the improvements are subtle to non-experts but are welcome and valuable nonetheless.
