Flight Simulator has never been better: notice the reflective water and realistic clouds

Flight Simulator X is the latest edition of Microsoft's respected series of flying sims. Once again you get to explore the wild blue yonder in various entertaining and challenging ways. Flight Simulator X even pushes the visual boundaries of the genre - but only if you've got the right hardware for it, as usual. In addition to the graphics overhaul, Flight Simulator X adds new features that let you enjoy the pleasures of flying, even if you're a beginner with the Flight Simulator series.

If I had to pick one game that doesn't need any introduction at the beginning of a review, this is the one. The name of the game says it all: flying, in every form, size and shape, is on center stage. You'll be put behind the controls of various flying vehicles, usually with some kind of a mission to complete; or if you prefer, you can just cruise around in endless good weather, with unlimited fuel and all the time in the world. Microsoft released the first Flight Simulator in the early 80's, and since then a new version has seen the light of day every few years. Each new version has gradually improved the game and introduced new features, but in essence the current edition is still very much the same as the very first one. The basics of flying are still the same, and yet again you will start your pilot's career behind the yoke of the ubiquitous Cessna 172. Flight Simulator X is bigger and better than ever, but there are some storms ahead that you need to prepare for. Expect a lot of turbulence if your gaming PC is not up to the job of running Flight Simulator X.

Nasty looking clouds ahead, and the water below is not very tempting either - even though it sure looks nice and detailed!

In one of the missions you join the Red Bull Air Race as a competing pilot.
