Multiplayer: everything and the kitchen sink

Breaking from the recent trend of "less is more" (when it's really just less), COD4 has an ample selection of 16 multiplayer maps and five official game modes, or a lot more if you include the various mods. The game features two different Capture The Flag game modes: Headquarters with moving flags and Domination with static flags. Sabotage is a one team attacks, one team defends game type with respawning, while Search & Destroy is a Counter-Strike style attack/defend where you only have one life per round. The self-explanatory Team Deathmatch and Free-for-all modes round out the selection. Most of the maps are fun to play using different game modes, while others are suitable for just one or two, and the Shipment map is basically just a curiosity. COD4 has a strong selection of multiplayer maps to go along with a bunch of great server-side customization options, which will keep the game fresh for a long time.

The Headquarters game mode is a lot of fun - it funnels players to the same flag (visually a laptop computer) for some intense action, but the flag location changes every time it's captured to provide variety

You can expect a lot of stuff to come down from the sky in Team Deathmatch and Free-for-all game modes, as good players rack up lots of kills and get rewarded with off-map support

The maps are almost all adapted from single player campaign missions, and they're medium to small in size. This translates to instant action in all game modes that allow respawning during the round. COD4's multiplayer maps feel like they're designed for thirty players or less. Since the game supports more players than that, it would have been nice to see one or more of the larger maps (such as the open fields of All Ghillied Up) in the multiplayer selection as well. There are servers with 50 people or more playing, but the maps get just too crowded and lethal, as grenades, air strikes and helicopters are flying all over the place.

Stronghold is a tiny map that's suitable for Search & Destroy games without respawning

The Cobra gunship, available to USMC and SAS players, is just as deadly as the OpFor's and Spetznaz's Hind chopper

Air strikes and helicopters you ask? Yes indeed, COD4 manages to incorporate these Battlefield 2-esque features into a Counter-Strike style multiplayer, with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles rounding out the selection of off-map support. There's no Commander or support classes a la BF2; instead, players get rewarded for kill streaks with the power to call off-map support. It's not necessarily a bad thing to have one ace player on your team who gets most of the kills, because that means more air strikes raining down on the opposing team. The more players there are in the game, the more off-map support there'll be. When you see those fighter-bombers appear on your HUD, duck for cover!

How the heck did the Hind see me through all that smoke?

Crossfire is a medium-sized multiplayer map with danger coming from all angles

Helicopter gunships bring a bit of the single player campaign's AI into COD4's multiplayer. After you call a helo to the battle, it'll function autonomously, machine-gunning down enemies who are too slow to get into cover, and firing rockets at enemy positions. After a few passes, the helicopter leaves the battlefield - unless it's shot down first. There are no specialized anti-air weapons in the game, but most weapons do some damage to helicopter gunships. With a light machine gun or an RPG-7 launcher, you can even go toe to toe with a Cobra or a Hind.

Effectiveness against helicopters is only one of the attributes that separates the game's various weapons, and make each of them useful in its own way. Your choice of primary weapon, and any weapons you pick up during the fight, affect your mobility: running and strafing speed. As a rule of thumb, close-range weapons like submachine guns and shotguns allow high mobility, while rifles and light machine guns slow you down but have a longer effective range. Infinity Ward got weapon balancing down pretty much perfectly during beta testing. You tend to see a wide variety of weapons used in every game you join, depending on the map, the players' preferences and their rank.
