Going OnlineIf the single player is an appetizer - a fine distraction to warm you up - the online play is the main course of Unreal Tournament 3. For online play, you can choose your character and then customize it with different outfit pieces and hairstyles. The selection is limited, but helps avoid the clone syndrome where people on the field look like each other.
You can choose from five proper game modes - Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Vehicle Capture the Flag and Warfare. In addition to these modes, there is a simple Duel game mode for those who want to go 1-on-1 with that special someone. Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch are your basic "shoot people" game modes: either as a free-for-all, or as team against team. Capture the Flag is another staple from way back - two teams trying to secure the flag of the opposing team by returning it to their own base. Vehicle CTF is a further modification of the normal Capture the Flag with the addition of larger maps and vehicles to the mix. Lost modes, changed weaponsUnreal Tournament 3 ditches Double Domination, Invasion and Bombing Run when compared to UT2004. While I would've preferred a wider selection, it's better to have less game modes that are actually play-tested and combined with a good selection of maps to support them. Unreal Tournament is also eminently moddable, and I'm sure at least some of these old game modes will make an appearance as a user-created mod. Weapons have also changed slightly: gone is the Shield Gun, replaced by the good old Impact Hammer - a nice change that returns the game towards its original roots. The Impact Hammer includes a new secondary EMP fire mode that damages vehicles and knocks out the power-ups (such as the damage boost or berserk) of enemy players.
The base weapon has also changed from Assault Rifle back to the original Enforcer, which fires either single shots or three round bursts. Both superweapons also make an appearance - Target Painter is used to summon orbital laser strikes to the battlefield and Redeemer is everyone's favourite single-shot nuclear missile. These weapons are usually placed strategically to spawn in a less contested area of the map, leading to fierce battles over the possession of the most powerful toys. The rest of the lineup is familiar from the previous titles - AVRiL Missile Launcher (with a new secondary fire mode), Shock Rifle, Bio Gun, Rocket Launcher, Flak Cannon and Link Gun. The minigun is replaced by the very similar Stinger and the Lightning Gun is also gone - replaced by the good old Sniper Rifle. Overall, the weapon selection feels more like the original Unreal Tournament, yet it provides a few new surprises to tweak the game a bit. To keep the people moving at a breakneck speed in larger maps, even when you end up without a vehicle, UT3 offer you a Hoverboard. It's exactly what the name implies - a floating "skateboard" - and it allows you move faster even while carrying either the flag or an Orb. There is a drawback to balance things out, though: if you are hit while using the board, you get knocked off, landing on your face and dropping anything you happened to be carrying; you also end up as a sitting duck for a second or two, while you get up.
