Those of us who aren't afraid to own up to spending time in an arcade in the mid-90s have fond memories of Sega Rally Championship. Born in the coin-slot halls in 1995 and eventually ported to the PC (as well as console and handheld platforms), Sega's rally racing game earned acclaim as a difficult yet entertaining racer. The game was small in scope, with just a handful of tracks and cars, but the excellent graphics and innovative take on road surfaces made up for the lack of depth. Dreamcast owners likely remember the 1998 sequel, Sega Rally Championship 2, as one of the few enjoyable racing titles available on the ill-fated console. It comes as no surprise that the release of Sega Rally (or Sega Rally Revo for US gamers) has a nostalgic quality for many gamers. If there's an original sin in the game development world, it's sullying the name of a classic series with the release of a half-baked successor. So is it cheers or jeers for Sega Rally?

Just Like The Arcade, With No Need For Quarters

Let's make this clear up front: Sega Rally has never been about simulating a true-to-life rally experience. To a certain degree, Codemasters' Colin McRae Rally series took that ball and ran with it. What Sega Rally lacks in nuance it more than makes up for in sheer excitement. The single-player experience has traditionally been challenging, and the hyper-competitive multiplayer led to the untimely death of more than one of my Dreamcast controllers. Sega Rally (Revo) doesn't deviate from its arcade heritage: the latest incarnation of the series remains true to the hyperactive, fast-paced gameplay that made it a classic.

It's an arcade racer, so sometimes the airtime is a little exaggerated.

Tracks are fleshed out with appropriate scenery.
