Earplugs Required

Of special note is the game's audio, which sits comfortably in the range of "Terrible" to "Won't make your ears bleed. Maybe." Sound effects are worse than any stock effects I've heard in commercial game. Explosions, for instance, are so understated that I had to wonder if my units weren't welcoming their demise. Voice acting is strictly amateur hour, and the constant repetition of catchphrases during battle will have you playing with the volume turned down and your stereo turned up. Following suit with the game's other components, a few nasty audio glitches, such as repeating sound clips and unintended audio silence during cutscenes, make the audio noteworthy solely for being horrible.

At Least Your Granny's PC Will Be Happy

Unsurprisingly, hardware requirements for SunAge are low. So low, in fact, that a "Laptop Friendly" logo is plopped next to the written hardware requirements on the packaging. Lighthouse Interactive calls for a minimum of a 1.2GHz Intel Pentium 3 or AMD Athlon Equivalent, 512 MB of system memory and a 128MB 3D-accelerated video card. My test processors are all post-2001, so I hunted for the oldest processor I could dredge up - an AMD Athlon 64 3000+ (clocked at 1.8GHz) - and underclocked it to 1.4GHz (the lowest clock speed at which Windows would remain stable). I paired this processor with a 128MB NVIDIA GeForce FX 5700 and 512MB of system RAM, and SunAge hummed along at a playable, if at times hitching, 20 fps. This, at a resolution of 1600x1200.

2D all the way: aside from resolution and Vsync settings, the lone graphics option is Particle Detail

The two-dimensional visuals are a retro throwback, though the lack of a zoom feature is disappointing

...and Particles set to 'Low'; there's no performance advantage in dropping from High, even on older machines

The lone quality setting: Particles set to 'High'...

Upping the clock speed to 1.8GHz improved playability, and moving to a 128MB NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT gave a steady 60 fps at 1920x1200. Even a lowly 128MB ATI Radeon X300 was enough give a perfectly playable experience at a resolution of 1600x1200. SunAge managed to consume 800 MB of RAM on Windows Vista (compared to about 450 MB of RAM under Windows XP), so the minimum requirement of 1GB (as stated on the box) for Microsoft's latest OS is spot on. Truth be told, the YouGamers minimum requirements are sufficient for running SunAge on any Windows XP machine.

YouGamers' recommended requirements are higher than necessary for purely economic reasons; it doesn't make sense to suggest older, more expensive GPUs when newer budget models offer more bang for the buck. Finally, the lone performance option - Particle Detail - had no measurable effect on performance, though this setting is likely to improve performance slightly on very dated GPUs.
