I Don't Even Want To Think About The Math...rFactor's authentic feel is due to the painstaking attention paid to physics - the heart of any serious racing sim. ISI's iMotor 2.0 physics engine provides one of the most accurate racing experiences available on the PC. Many factors play a part in modeling a vehicle's behavior: tires (wear, road conditions), drivetrain, suspension, aerodynamics and car damage, to name a few. The physics engine samples these variables many times a second and performs the necessary calculations to determine a car's position. This complex physics modeling takes such details as tire wear and engine torque into consideration, and the result is a faithful representation of real-world driving physics. Damage also plays a role: lose a rear wing in a crash, for instance, and downforce is reduced, resulting in less traction at the rear wheels.
Skirting Licensing Issues To Deliver Great ContentCompleting timed solo laps is fun, particularly on rFactors detailed tracks. While the game lacks licensed tracks, some real-world circuits do ship with the game (albeit under easily deciphered pseudonyms). Four real tracks, including the Nurburgring ("Nuerburg" in rFactor) and Circuit Gilles Villeneuve ("Montreal") are supplemented by fictional tracks, including the excellent Lienz mountain course and Jacksonville Speedway oval. On a higher level, tracks are competently designed, but the little details - such as road surface anomalies and deformable terrain - are missing. The brief off-pavement excursions, for instance, feel completely plastic and inauthentic. rFactor (and other PC racing sims, for that matter) would do well to implement some form of improved physics modeling for off-road racing. rFactor's car selection offers a decent selection of open-wheel and sedan racers, with a host of upgrades available for purchase (as your credit balance permits, of course). The lone licensed vehicle is an Intel-sponsored BMW Sauber Forumla One car. ISI have done an commendable job, however, in creating fictional makes and models, even going so far as to create websites and historical lore for the in-house "manufacturers". Gearheads will love the detailed car setup options available in a practice or race session, and the game ships with a handful of saved setups (though not for all cars) which adjust a car for specific race settings. And though rFactor lacks a tie-in with commercial telemetry analysis software (as GTR has with MoTec), a few enterprising modders have released free telemetry software which integrate with rFactor.
