Not For The Faint Of Heart

Don't let the training missions fool you: this isn't a screen you'll see often

Blitzkrieg 2: Liberation is only for the most dedicated of Blitzkrieg 2 fans, the gaming masochist who also shares a passion for WWII military history. For this very small group of players, the game will seem like the perfect fit - deep, historically accurate and difficult to the core. For others, however, there's little incentive to progress beyond the tutorials. The concentrated tactics gameplay is just too deep for a casual experience, and is likely too esoteric even for hardcore RTS junkies. Multiplayer is the lone saving grace for these gamers, but there is nary a multiplayer match to be found via the in-game Nival Interactive matchmaking service.

As a focused and detailed strategy experience, however, Blitzkrieg 2: Liberation is a very capable game. If you're up for a tactical challenge that's unrelenting in its difficulty, then the game is for you. Just don't expect to find many others who will echo your sentiments.

Scores

Gameplay 67 The game does one thing, and does it very well. So well, in fact, that very few will have the tenacity to stick with it. Difficult as it is, the gameplay is fundamentally solid,.
Graphics 63 Capable if not stellar, the visuals are a mixed bag. Textures on buildings and scenery are decent, but are lackluster on vehicles. Overall, it feels stuck in a previous generation of strategy titles.
Audio 60 Not the strong point of the package. Haughty musical scores are supplemented by decent voice acting (though soldier's quips could use some re-scripting). Software 3D audio is a plus, adding atmosphere to the otherwise average aural package.
Technology 56 The graphics engine is aged, and there are very few options to tweak performance. Key bindings are hard-coded and the interface is ugly, but in-game elements, such as unit path-finding and scenario scripting, stand out as well-tested.
OVERALL
69
Definitely not for everyone, there's a small group of who will potentially enjoy this expansion pack: namely, those who enjoyed the initial release of Blitzkrieg 2. A condensed and focused tactical strategy game, Blitzkrieg 2: Liberation fills a narrow niche. Difficult to a fault, only series veterans will have a chance at victory.
