Very PrettyConsidering that Trials 2: Second Edition is a low-budget indie title that you can grab for $20, it looks damn beautiful - assuming you have the hardware. All the latest rendering tricks have been put to a good use. If you have a modern video card, Trials 2 will torture it with per-pixel lighting, pixel-perfect dynamic shadows, motion blur, depth of field etc. Yet at the same time you can play the game with just about any PC with any sort of a gaming video card - all you need is 128MB of video memory and DX9 support. Trials 2 actually contains two separate modes - "Normal" and "Ultra High". On the Normal mode, the lighting effects are gone, but the game runs on almost anything - even on the Intel GMA950 laptop chip. Yet at the same time those with GeForce 8800 or Radeon HD38x0 series cards can enjoy the latest shiny effects at insane resolutions. This is definitely how one should develop PC games - with visuals that are functional even on gimpy hardware, while offering extreme shiny for those with the needed hardware.
The YouGamers minimum configuration has been set as the reasonable minimum for absolutely smooth gameplay using the Normal visuals, and the recommended configuration is what you need to run the Ultra High settings smoothly. However, as long as you meet the publishers minimum, the game will run fairly well.
Trials 2 also offers numerous different camera modes for showing off from extreme angles, but in practice these are useful only for watching replays - good luck trying to actually drive from Bike or Headlight camera angles. The ambulance is standing by... Extreme PhysicsThe courses are filled with various hazards for our brave rider. Here Jorma managed to dive into a flaming barrel. Ouch. Trials 2 rounds up the pretty visuals with great ragdoll physics and provides truly gut-wrenching crashes when you happen to lose it with the bike. I guess the only thing missing from the carnage is the sound of bones breaking as Jorma comes tumbling down from great heights, landing face first on the solid concrete floor. He even bounces like the proverbial dead cat on landing, with the bike going on it's merry way - sometimes adding insult to injury as it comes tumbling down on your head. Sure, he's wearing a helmet, but with these tracks it's not much. Some tracks up the ante with flaming barrels and insane drops you have to clear, all while balancing on the bike that has the tendency to flip from under you if you give it too much throttle. In addition to more mudane stats such as airtime, wheelies, number of falls and your time, Trials 2: Second Edition actually keeps count of the number of bones you break, and the related achievement is most likely the first one you'll earn - and definitely the only one you'll get without trying hard.
