TMNT is action all the way, just like it should be.

With the new movie out, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are once again officially back for a new generation of fans. I don't have much of a clue what today's kids think of the Turtles, but back when they were new, they were popular. This offering from Ubisoft is far from being the first Turtles game but I guess enough time has passed, since the previous ones from Konami, that there is no need to tag on a spiffy subtitle to separate this offering from the old classics.

Almost everything has changed in the world of video games since we last saw Turtles taking names and kicking butt. People have invented such high-tech features for games as three-dimensional graphics made using polygons, and some eggheads even figured out a way to texture and shade those polygons. Yep, it's been that long. Turtles may now be all polygons instead of bitmaps but the basic formula is still the same. Four loud-mouthed teen ninjas with green skin and hard shells are once again roaming the city streets, wiping the floor with random thugs and lowlifes while cracking their legendary one-liners with philosophical guidance from their sensei, Splinter.

Comic book interludes between levels keep the story going.

I haven't seen the movie yet, so I can't say how accurately the game follows the plot. In the game, the story is covered by the Turtles retelling their adventures among themselves while you are storming through the levels. Voice acting, while not using the voice talents from the movie, is definitely of high quality. Between levels story continues in the form of pages from a comic book, with the characters again telling what happened, as if recalling their adventures while browsing a comic book about it. The story feels confusing early on, but it works. If you pay attention, you can piece the story together as levels go by.
