Still a Classic

No guns for you - I like this match up too much.

On the upside Firaxis is known for it's good post-launch support, and since Civ4 engine is eminently moddable, some of the issues can be modded away - in fact, there is already an unofficial "PatchMod" available that resolves many of the issues I mentioned (and several others that are mostly minor irritations). It's not an official patch, but it improves the gameplay until Firaxis can produce one. I'd prefer to see games released complete, properly tested and polished, but this is the next best option.

Beyond the issues mentioned, the game was and still is a classic and offers fun for countless of hours. Move to a modern game engine hasn't really changed that. On the flipside, this is the old Colonization. The improvements are very minor, mostly "freebies" from the transition to the modern engine. Anyone expecting a true modernization of the game concept is bound to be disappointed. While Civilization gameplay was improved in countless different ways over the years, the same does not apply this time. Colonization was always the "simpler sister game" of the original Civilization, but just porting over the gameplay to a modern game engine feels like a quick hack, even if the lower price point somewhat reflects that. A good game, but not "Colonization 2".

Scores

Gameplay 89 Competent remake of the classic that still works. Some changes and improvements to the original, but not a really a sequel. Has some annoying gameplay balance oversights, but still as entertaining as ever.
Graphics 80 Based on Civilization 4, so looks roughly the same. Additional visuals related to the Colonization-specific gameplay elements are weak, but it's not that important for a strategy game - looks "good enough".
Audio 79 Reuses many audio assets from Civilization 4. Background music disappointing.
Technology 78 Nothing has really changed from Civilization 4, so the engine is already showing it's age. Also means that the game runs on just about any PC.
OVERALL
85
The classic gameplay is mostly untouched, so all the grumpy old gamers will feel right at home. On the other hand, anyone who wanted a true sequel might be disappointed by the lack of real gameplay improvements. In dire need of a gameplay balancing patch to sort out the rough edges.
