Good, But Sands of Time Was Better

Just don't look down!

Prince of Persia is an admirable shot at re-imaging the franchise, but unfortunately it fails at the first hurdle - as a game, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time is better and more true to the very first game of the series. I know, it's a massive hurdle to clear and visually Prince of Persia gets there, but it's the gameplay that ultimately counts. Sorry.

While Prince of Persia is an improvement over Two Thrones and a respectable part of a great series, none of the sequels have managed to touch the sheer genius of Sands of Time. And the reason for that? Ubisoft was not happy with the sales figures of Sands of Time and instead of just fixing the real problem (poor marketing) they had to go ahead and tinker the formula over and over again, each time failing to capture the magic of the original in a whole new way. So they failed less this time around? Good, but I'm still waiting for another true Prince of Persia game with the style, gameplay and feel of Sands of Time.

Still, until Ubisoft figures it all out, this Prince of Persia is a great substitute. It's a bit short and easy but every bit of it looks impressive and plays well. Bonus points for a solid PC version published on time with the console versions and without any DRM at all. Install the game, store the disc in a safe place and play. No disc checks, no install limits, no activation calls home - just like it should be.

So... it may not be quite as great as Sands of Time, but is it still worth buying? Definitely.

Scores

Gameplay 90 The non-stop gravity-defying action breaks all kinds of laws of physics but it's supposed to be a magical fairy tale anyway. The game flows smoothly and plays well - up to a degree that makes the whole thing a bit too simple and easy.
Graphics 94 You either love or hate the new style - I loved it, and either way the animation quality is just incredible.
Audio 90 Professional voice actors at work, suitable music that fits the action.
Technology 92 Polished, bug-free and with reasonable system requirements. Graphical options are a bit limited but it doesn't really matter as they allow the game to scale well enough. Bonus points for no DRM of any kind.
OVERALL
90
The new visual style works and the technical side of the game is flawless but ultimately this re-imaging of Prince of Persia ends up being a bit short and easy. In the quest to rid the game of all potential sources of frustration, the low difficulty level is unfortunate collateral damage. Fun and accessible but fails to match the brilliance of Sands of Time.
