Verdict: Fail

Sorry, Jason. Not enough action, not enough role-playing.

I really wanted to like Rise of the Argonauts but I can't deny the fact that it's a textbook case of a bad PC game. It carries two separate diseases plaguing PC games these days - the "rush things and patch it later" and the "lets hit the magic win32 recompile switch" curse of a poorly done PC port with zero extra effort beyond what's on the Xbox 360.

And that's not all - while there are some unpolished bits and bugs, the actual flaws run deep. I'm not sure where this train went off the tracks or what's the root cause, but my personal feeling is that Rise of the Argonauts was just too ambitious for the development team, so in order to actually ship a game they kept cutting corners and the end result is a jumble of compromises.

It actually seems like nobody had the time to actually ensure that the game is any fun to play. Even if you decide to minimize your UI for better immersion, the game has to give you all the needed information and play well without the HUD you are omitting. Rise of the Argonauts doesn't - it feels like you are constantly pushing onwards with one hand behind your back with critical bits of information either not shown at all or hidden in a clumsy pause menu.

Still, the basic concept is okay, there are some good design ideas and in many places the art is actually good but in the end the game feels like a big budget concept done on a shoestring budget. There is far too much talk for a pure action game while all the corner-cutting results in a RPG that is basically just button mashing. The sum of all the parts just fails to truly take advantage of the concept. The few good design ideas are more than offset by the terrible ones and the poor UI design choices just don't work. If you insist that you want to check out the story anyway, wait until you find the game in the bargain bin - it's going to end up there very soon.

Scores

To learn more about our scoring methodology, please click here.

Gameplay 59 Stiff, unpolished and filled with corner-cutting. Not enough action for an action game, not enough roleplaying elements for a proper RPG.
Graphics 79 In many places the background and character art is quite good but the quality doesn't stay constant across the game. Some models and areas feel outright unfinished, mostly due to poor lighting and simple models.
Audio 81 Probably the best aspect of the game. Voice acting is passable and there is a ton of it.
Technology 61 No graphical options beyond the amateurish "low version" shortcut. Poor console port with no real effort. Unstable on ATI hardware, crashing to desktop from time to time.
OVERALL
63
Rise of the Argonauts may be based on some ambitious ideas, but the implementation is terribly uneven and filled with obvious corner-cutting. The "action" and "RPG" elements are both weak and what little gameplay there is feels flat and uninteresting. PC conversion is a rush job with little effort to cater for the platform.
