Ambitious Failure

Empire: Total War is pretty when you zoom in close, but nice visuals do not cover the fact that it was released unfinished.

Creative Assembly has definitely filled their plate by expanding the scope of the game to cover all the major aspects of 18th century warfare. On the other hand, some features of Medieval 2: Total War were lost in the process and while the introduction of proper naval battles is a long-awaited addition to the series, it seems to have happened partially at the expense of land warfare. Now don't get me wrong, both types of battles are pretty and entertaining but the AI desperately needs a brain transplant and in the long run the battles tend to get repetitive as the armies of different nations lack individuality that mixed things up so much in Medieval 2: Total War.

Empire: Total War may be fixable, but as it stands today, it's one of those exploitable and buggy messes released far too early. Sure, the visuals look good and the underlying game concept is still solid but no matter how you put it, it's a game that ended up on the market in an unfinished state. While Empire: Total War might become a great game after a few additional patches and Creative Assembly has so far committed to fixing things, it's not there yet - not by a longshot. Sure, it's not a total loss even today, but unless you posses a near-infinite patience towards buggy code and poor AI, it may be worth waiting a bit and taking a look again in a few months.

Scores

To learn more about our scoring methodology, please click here.

Gameplay 81 Keeps on expanding the scope of Total War, yet takes some steps backwards in the name of streamlining things. Riddled with poor AI, gameplay bugs and balance issues.
Graphics 93 Watching little guys slaughter each other on the battlefield has never looked so good. New naval battles are very detailed and beautiful.
Audio 90 Solid music, as is the norm for Total War games. Tons of high quality voiceovers explaining the gameplay and solid effects round things out.
Technology 83 The practical requirements are a lot higher than the theoretical minimum and performance bugs bog things down on higher settings no matter what you have as hardware. Some unresolved crash bugs require save file micromanagement.
OVERALL
83
Empire: Total War is impressive and very ambitious in scope, but it feels like the final polish was sacrificed to ship the game according to a set schedule. First patches have resolved some of the worst bugs, but the gameplay is still riddled with dumb AI and other issues that can't be overlooked. Pretty and perhaps after some patches a truly great game, but it's not there just yet.
