Impressive, With Some Reservations

Dreadnought on a rampage - shame you get it so late in the campaign.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II is innovative and deserves praise for that. I personally have never liked RTS games that much, but here the single player campaign is something different. Heck, in a way it's the closest thing to a proper turn-based squad-level strategy game since the days of X-Com. I really shouldn't be surprised as this is exactly what a Warhammer 40k title should be, staying true to the feel of the original table-top miniature game. Okay, so you can't market a turn-based game to the masses these days, so it has to be real time. Still, somehow, the single player campaign with just a handful of units to control feels a lot like one.

The co-op mode is just icing on the cake, allowing you to play the campaign with a friend and micromanage the units even better as you end up with just two units under your command. Okay, so the missions can get a bit repetitive, especially with the repeating optional deployments that re-visit already seen maps. On the other hand as those missions gives experience and loot some repetition is easier to stomach.

Unfortunately many aspects of the single player mode of Dawn of War II translate poorly to head-to-head RTS play, so for the multiplayer the solution of going back to fighting over resources and building units with those resources is somewhat understandable. Still, more mundane gameplay, low number of maps, balance issues, limited unit selection and the omission of 2vs2 play all are downers for the skirmish mode. Dawn of War II multiplayer is not bad, it's just... average, and bit of a let-down after the innovative and excellent singleplayer campaign.

Still, Dawn of War II dares to try new things and in many ways cements the reputation of Relic as the premier RTS developer that isn't afraid to do something that isn't just a crappy Command & Conquer clone. Even if the whole package isn't perfect, it's one of the best offerings for any RTS cravings at the moment and could keep you entertained until Blizzard nukes the competition from orbit with Starcraft 2.

Scores

To learn more about our scoring methodology, please click here.

Gameplay 90 Innovative RPG-RTS hybrid in singleplayer but relies on more mundane RTS gameplay for multiplayer. Missions can get a bit repetitive and multiplayer suffers from limited number of maps and balance issues.
Graphics 92 Pretty explosions, destructible cover and buildings, plenty of detail that stays true to the source material.
Audio 87 Effects and voices do their job admirably, but the music tends to fade away to the background.
Technology 88 Couple of nasty bugs with the initial release and can still end up crashing from time to time, but Relic is good at fixing such issues. Scales reasonably well, but gets fairly ugly on low end systems.
OVERALL
89
Dawn of War II is a highly innovative twist on the usual RTS formula that dares to think outside the box while staying true to the WH40k source material. Campaign co-op play is a great addition to the already superb single player game but the head-to-head multiplayer skirmish is a bit of a disappointment.

Dawn of War II uses Steam as DRM (even retail boxes authenticate via Steam) and Games for Windows live for achievements and multiplayer matchmaking. Internet connection is mandatory.
