It's Actually a Good Game!

"I'm the best at what I do - and what I do is not very nice."

I guess the most remarkable thing about X-Men Origins: Wolverine is that it is a proper Wolverine game - plenty of blood and guts all over with no apologies for the fact that Wolverine is what he is, a brutal killing machine. While there are minor faults here and there, the key bit is that the game is fun, stable and the action stays fresh enough for at least one complete play-through. The normal mode is a bit on the easy side, but at least it limits interruptions due to deaths to the few annoying platforming bits where a failed jump sends Wolverine falling down, requiring you to restart from the previous checkpoint.

The story is what you'd expect from a game based on the comics and while it does incorporate the movie storyline, it also slips in plenty of original story to expand the backstory of Wolverine beyond the movie. Original bits from Raven Software are true to the comic books and the sub-plot involving a massive secret Sentinel factory adds in that "epic" factor that is sorely missing from the movie.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine actually delivers what the developers claimed - it is "a movie game that does not suck". It certainly is a piece of "disposable" entertainment, not really designed to keep you coming back for additional plays over and over again. Yet in my opinion there is certainly enough well-implemented and bloody entertainment in the box to justify the price tag - about 15 hours or so, in case such detail matters to you. Once you are done with the story you can always sell off your copy to someone else - there is no intrusive DRM that would tie the copy to you, just a simple disc-in-drive check. Alternatively you could just rent the console version for a long weekend. Either way, X-Men Origins: Wolverine is definitely not your average licensed pile of crap and is easily worth checking out.

Scores

Gameplay 83 Gameplay does have some repetitive elements and not exactly filled with original ideas, yet the whole package somehow works very well. The action is smooth and fun, staying true to what Wolverine is by including plenty of blood and severed limbs.
Graphics 91 The usual multiplatform shortcomings can be noticed in texturing and somewhat small play areas, but the issues are minor and the PC version easily looks better than the console cousins at higher resolutions. Besides, Wolverine has the goods where it counts - animation is almost universally superb and so is the overall character detail. Who cares about a low res texture on a background object or two?
Audio 88 Solid audio, bonus points for original actors providing majority of the voices.
Technology 86 Effectively no graphics options, and the practical system requirements are a bit high, even for Unreal Engine-based title. Polished, no noticeable bugs or crashes.
OVERALL
87
X-Men Origins: Wolverine may not be a perfect masterpiece, but it has been polished from all the right spots. Non-stop action worthy of the M-rating, showing you exactly what you can do with a pair of adamantium claws in gory detail. Does not offer that much replay value but stays fun all the way to the end.
