A Proper Ghostbusters Game

And that's a ghost of a fisherman in the bag.

Despite the few nagging issues and chronic lack of replayability on the PC, Ghostbusters is still pretty good. The story is true to the first movie while still being a whole new adventure and the action stays enjoyable throughout the game. Okay, so everything is strictly linear and follows a carefully crafted progression dictated by the storyline but that's a fundamental design decision and while I personally prefer games that let you explore a larger play area, as far as linear story-driven games, Ghostbusters is one of the better ones.

There are some rough spots with transitions to and from pre-rendered scenes and at times it feels like either something in the story got cut or someone didn't get the memo how a particular scene should transfer from a pre-rendered bit to an in-engine bit and then ultimately to actual gameplay. This is not a general problem throughout the game - just an issue with some specific places where continuity is broken by an unexpected or unexplained jump.

The actual gameplay is enjoyable, if a bit console-y, but in this case the slight sluggishness could very well be intentional - you are, after all, running around with a heavy proton pack on your back. Gameplay works best on a gamepad but a keyboard and a mouse works very well and the port to the PC has been polished with care - even if the multiplayer ended up as a casualty. In short, the PC version is obviously the best-looking version of the game, leaving Xbox 360 and PS3 versions in the dust visually.

On the subject of missing multiplayer, I do not view it as a big deal - even on the Xbox 360 and PS3 it is a separate game mode developed by a separate team that has little to do with the main game - in essence it is just a tick box feature so the console version box can claim "multiplayer". The PC version, sold at half price and presenting the best version of the singleplayer content, is still a fair deal.

In summary, it all boils down to a simple question - are you a fan of Ghostbusters? If so, this is a game crafted with great enthusiasm and attention to detail with numerous in-jokes and one-liners that managed to pull a smile out of this grumpy old game reviewer more than once. That carries the game through even as the gameplay itself is somewhat limited and linear. Not a fan? Then I guess you can disregard all this and consider the game as yet another unremarkable licensed title. But hey, it's Ghostbusters!

Scores

Gameplay 83 Very linear but manages to capture the action of the movies. You actually get to play as a Ghostbuster and use all those cool gadgets - and a wide selection of new ones. Manages to keep the action fresh far longer than you'd expect - if you are a fan.
Graphics 87 Best looking version of the game. Suffers from slight issues with texture resolution in some places but otherwise looks very good.
Audio 88 Authentic music from the movies and the actors reprising their roles for some excellent voiceovers. Could have used some additional in-game music - some of the musical cues get repetitive over time.
Technology 80 Competent PC port that gets thumbs down for the omission of multiplayer. In a way the game works just fine as a singplayer affair but no matter how you put it, stuff was cut so the PC version would need less new code.
OVERALL

What can I say - Ghostbusters: The Video Game succeeds in being a proper Ghostbusters game with a good storyline and gameplay that fits the setting and gets a thumbs up for that. On the other hand, it is embarrassingly linear with almost zero replayability and the PC version omits multiplayer modes found on the consoles. At least it is priced accordingly, offering reasonable value.

Note: Boxed retail copies use SecuROM with limited activations and internet connection is required for installation. Activations can be revoked when the game is uninstalled. Steam version uses only Steam itself for DRM.
